Bernhard Christian Moy, of Sloatsburg, NY passed away on Sunday, February 27, 2022 at the age of 86. Bernhard was born to the late Ole and Olava (Olsen) Moy on February 14, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY. He spent his young childhood in Staten Island, then moved with his family up-state to North Hoosick, NY. Bernhard met Anna Grevstad while visiting family in Norway. Consequently, they were married on August 27, 1966, at First Assembly of God in North Hoosick.
Bernhard, known to all as ‘Ben’ or ‘Benny’, was an active parishioner at Faith Assembly of God in Chestnut Ridge, NY. He made church a priority for his family. Everyone at church was considered like family and many of the friendships he started there lasted throughout his life.
While growing up Ben loved school, sports and the outdoors. His strong arm and quick reflexes earned him catcher on his High School baseball team, while his quick wrist and sharp eye made him Hoosick Falls High School ping-pong champion. He earned salutatorian (2nd highest) in his graduating class. Ben’s home was shared with his mother Olava, father Ole and two sisters Yngveig and Ellen. The small town home was a farm where Ben milked cows and walked his goat “Nicky” to the local grocery store. Running through the property, the Walloomsac River made it convenient for him to explore his love of fishing.
His first job out of high school was at a local shoe factory near home where he became manager. In 1968 he started working at IBM in the NY city area. Eventually, Ben and Anna built a home in Sloatsburg, NY where they lived and raised their children. Several of Ben’s friends help him build his home of 44 years for which he was forever grateful. After retiring from IBM he started working for Aalborg Instruments in 1993 and worked until the age of 79 when he fully retired.
Ben was beloved by his family and friends, and would never hesitate to lend a hand to whomever. His gentle and welcoming nature would bring a smile to everyone, as he had a rare gift to engage in conversation. He was very fond of traveling to Norway to visit family and friends.
Ben is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years Anna Moy, cherished children Kristine Karlson (Glen Karlson), Erik Moy (Lusvit Moy), and Andrew Moy (Nancy Moy), adored grandchildren Lena Chase (Christopher Chase), Kurt Karlson, Mia Karlson, Erika Moy, Hanna Moy, and step-grandchildren Julia Lareau, and Lawrence Lareau, precious great granddaughter Anja Chase, and by his caring older sister Yngveig Lewis. Bernhard was predeceased by his beloved sister Ellen Dittrich.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11am on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Faith Assembly of God, 921 Chestnut Ridge Rd, Chestnut Ridge, NY 10977. Interment will be private at Airmont Lutheran Cemetery.
