

George Leonard Yates, 88, of Wilson, beloved husband of the late Evelyn McIninch Yates, passed away in his home on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015.George was born in Tallman, New York, Jan. 4, 1927, a son of the late Leonard Yates Jr. and the late Cora Sutherland Yates. He had lived in New York before moving to North Carolina in 1997. He had been employed as an engineer for AT&T/Verizon for many years until his retirement. He had been a member of the Suffern, New York Volunteer Fire Department and was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy.He is survived by his daughter, Diane Johnson, and her husband, David, of Wilson; his son, Robert Yates, and his wife, Charlene, of Warwick, New York; his grandchildren, James McNamara, and his wife, Whitney, Ryan McNamara, Christopher McNamara, Gina Peattie, and her husband, James, Stephen Yates and David Yates; and his great-grandchildren, Matthew Peattie and Emily Peattie.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Millspaugh.George was an avid golfer and was addicted to Fox News. He enjoyed his computer and had taught himself to use his Flight Simulator program. His real joy however, was being "Pop-Pop" to his grandchildren, who he simply adored. George was loved by his family and will truly be missed.His family will receive relatives and friends from 1-3 p.m. Monday at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Route 59, Suffern, NY 10901. The funeral service will begin in the chapel at 3 p.m. with the interment to follow at Brick Church Cemetery in New Hempstead, New York.
