Barbara Kulpinsky, 85, of Missouri City, Texas, passed away on January 02, 2026, after a long illness. She was predeceased by her parents, Raymond and Mary Elizabeth Gerloff of Mattison Illinois, and sister, Marilyn Gerloff of Missouri City. Barbara is survived by her son, Josh.
Barbara grew up and attended high school in Mattison, Illinois. She earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education, married Joe Kulpinsky in 1969, then ventured to France, where she taught the children of US military parents. That experience sparked a lifelong love of travel and adventure as she and her husband Joe resigned from their respective jobs and traveled throughout Europe for a year.
‘BK’, as she came to be known, returned to the States to teach and explore educational administration in Massachusetts, where her many successes opened yet more opportunities. She moved to Texas in 1981 to become the Principal of Quail Valley Elementary in the Fort Bend ISD.
BK’s leadership, skill, and success at Quail Valley were profound and in 1986, she earned the honor of becoming the inaugural Principal at the newly constructed Highlands Elementary School.
Barbara Kulpinsky was the Principal at Highlands from 1986 until her retirement in2005. She inspired those around her-- teachers, staff, students, and administrative colleagues. Indeed, she inspired the entire Community. This inspiration bred improvement, achievement, and success.
Barbara volunteered at her church, with the Boy Scouts, the Big Sisters in Massachusetts and other community organizations and school district committees. She also assisted in the alternative certification of teachers.
Her retirement years capitalized on her desire to explore the outdoors-she loved skiing, camping and canoeing. She was proud of her gardening skills, enjoyed birdwatching, and was often seen biking around her neighborhood or walking her dog, Elliot.
BK will be missed by her son Josh, a host of life-long friends, and colleagues.
A private graveside gathering will be held at 11:00am on January 12, 2026, at Morton Cemetery, 900 Morton Street, Richmond, Texas 77469. A celebration of Barbara’s life and legacy is planned for the end of January.
