BEVERLY MAE (BRYAN) GARTON, was born on February 8, 1929 in Spearfish, South Dakota, to Lyle and Harriet Bryan. She was married to James Curtis Garton, on January 1, 1948. Beverly and Curt lived in Des Moines, Iowa, until they moved to Texas in 1962. Curt and Bev raised three boys: Kyle, Kevin and Kelly, all of whom have survived their parents.
Beverly is survived by her brother, Phillip Bryan (St. Louis, Missouri); sister, Sharon (Bryan) Dexter (of Iowa and Florida). Bev’s youngest sister, Brenda (Bryan) Rickerd preceded all of her older siblings in death on March 30, 2014.
As a young girl, Beverly enjoyed playing with her dog German shepherd dog Jack down at the Mineral Springs, Iowa. Bev attended public schools in Corydon, Iowa and was also a cheerleader there in high school.
Upon moving to Texas, Beverly worked as a billing and bookkeeping specialist in the Houston Medical Center (1) for pathology doctors Lind, Hill, Webb and Associates for 5 or 6 years; (2) she also worked for a travel agency near the Houston medical center, (3) as well as a couple of other construction firms in southwest Houston including Harris Development Corporation in order to be closer to home for her three kids.
Beverly used most of her free time in the service of Westbury United Methodist Church in southwest Houston from 1967 up until 1978; she made quite a few friends and very much enjoyed their company;
her best friend was Ginny Hardesty.
Beverly’s husband Curt was a bricklayer, stone mason and also a construction superintendent. Curt and his brother-in-law (Louis Alcox) built a new beautiful two-story stone masonry home in the new Fondren Southwest subdivision in 1975. On 6/20/1978, her husband Curt Garton passed away as the result of a construction accident on his job site. Shortly thereafter, Beverly’s mom Harriett Bryan moved in with her;
Harriet passed away in 1981.
Beverly dearly loved her three boys all of whom live in southwest Houston and Sugar Land. Kyle is an engineering piping design specialist; Kevin is an engineering electrical design specialist; Kelly is an assistant manager at Walgreen’s. Beverly also has two grandchildren – Emily and Wesley.
Mom had been living in two different assisted care facilities over the past 6 years. She started out in
The Terrace at First Colony (Sugar Land, TX) for 2 years and most recently she lived at Emeritus at Sugar Land Oaks for the last 4 years, also in Sugar Land.
Beverly enjoyed going to Houston Astros baseball games with her boys and grandchildren, making puzzles, decorative sequin wall hangings, and of course cooking. Beverly especially enjoyed being with her two grandkids during Christmas time. Mom/Grandma will be sorely missed.
