DONALD WAYNE MATTERN, 67, completed his earthly journey November 29, 2014 and joined his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Heaven. Waiting to welcome him to his eternal home was his mother, Mary Mattern.
Don was born December 19, 1946 in Houston, Texas, where he spent his boyhood. Upon graduation from Sam Houston High School, Don attended Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. After college, he began a 38 year career with Shell Oil Company.
Don was a loyal member for almost forty years of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Sugar Land, where he lived most of his adult life. He served as a member of St. Theresa council of the Knights of Columbus.
Don considered his greatest accomplishment to be a father to his two sons, Jason and Jeremy. He loved the outdoors and being with his boys in their activities- hunting, fishing, archery and bmx bike racing. Don was an accomplished cook and loved preparing meals for family and friends. He also enjoyed gardening and sharing the fruits of his labor.
In his later years, Don enjoyed fishing at his residence and accompanying Jason and his family to their ranch. His son Jeremy has his pilot’s license and he loved spending time flying with him. After he fully retired, Don enjoyed working with Jeremy in several of Jeremy’s businesses.
Left to treasure Don’s memory are his wife, Helen Davey Mattern; his father, Albert Mattern of Richards, Texas; two sons, Jason (Emily) of Boerne, Texas, and Jeremy of Houston, Texas; brothers, Mauris (Ginia) Mattern, James Mattern, and Russell (Debbie) Mattern, all of Houston; and three grandchildren, Jacob, Lily, and Trevor Mattern of Boerne. He is also survived by three stepchildren, Paul (Heather) Davey of Sugar Land, Carol (Craig) Redding of Katy, and Doug (Cindy) Davey of Houston; and five step grandchildren, Christian and Michael Davey of Sugar Land, and Kylie, Colton, and Caden Redding of Katy.
Friends are invited to a visitation with the family from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, December 4, 2014, at The Settegast-Kopf Co. @ Sugar Creek, 15015 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, December 5, 2014, at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 705 St. Theresa Blvd., Sugar Land. Rite of Committal will be held at St. Stanislaus Church Cemetery, in Anderson, TX.
