Our dear mother Evelyn Angelina Phillips fell asleep in the Lord on December 26, 2022, at the age of 91 in Sugar Land, TX. She was born in Jersey City, NJ on August 28, 1931 and lived a life of vibrance and selfless concern for others. Evelyn was married to Nicholas and raised her family in New Jersey and in a suburb of Cleveland Ohio. She moved to Sugar Land Texas in 1997 to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
She was a kind, thoughtful mother who always put her family first. She was there for us whenever we needed her guidance, and every moment was a teaching moment. She pushed her children and grandchildren to be the best that they could be academically and as a person. She loved to read novels, follow the stock market daily and had a green thumb!
The most important aspect of her life was her Greek Orthodox faith. Her strong Orthodox faith led her to a life of serving the church. Over her lifetime, she was Godmother to seven children. She was President of the St. Demetrios Philoptochos, in Rocky River, Ohio, for many years and in that capacity, led the fundraising for the large platytera, mosaic of the Icon of the Theotokos which resides above the altar to this day. She was Chairman for the annual Greek Festival and raised funds to build the new church. Evelyn served as Greek School Teacher and then became Principal of the Greek School for over a decade.
Evelyn also had many loyal friends and was a well-loved member of the community, especially in her 30+ years in Cleveland, Ohio. School teacher by degree, she worked in the New Jersey and Cleveland area school systems. She was commissioned by the Cleveland school system to co-author a book on child behavior, that was later published.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her loving husband, Nicholas, and her Greek immigrant parents, George and Panayotitsa., and younger brother Peter. Evelyn is survived by her two children, Denise (Michael) Manos and George (Nicole) Phillips. Her biggest source of joy and blessings were her four grandsons: Theophanes, Nicholas, Christopher and Alexander. Evelyn is also survived by her sister-in-law Militsa Phillips and nieces Patti (Steve) Manis, Stella (Billy) Kopellas, and their children Christo, Maria, and Christina.
Overall, Evelyn led a long, blessed life and shared many glorious moments with her family, Koumbari and friends.
A visitation for Evelyn will be held Wednesday, January 4, 2023 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3511 Yoakum Blvd, Houston, TX 77006, followed by a funeral service from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Burial Will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Houston TX.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.settegastkopf.com for the Phillips family.
