Jacob Van Mantgem dedicated his life to the service of others. Born in The Netherlands, in the aftermath of World War II he immigrated to the United States at age 10 in the company of his large family. He graduated high school in Denver, Colorado, and went on to earn a master of divinity from the Western Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan and a master’s degree in political science from the University of Iowa.
Jake served as pastor for many decades, both in Iowa and Texas, his ministry distinguished by his charity and abiding love. He led his congregations in demonstration of the Living Word. He kept God and His church always at the center of his life. He prayed with the sick at the hospital. He officiated marriages with cheer. He answered late-night calls from strangers in need. He presided over funeral services in the spirit of grace.
Jake and his wife, Mary Lillian Land, moved to the Houston area in 1989. An inseparable couple for 37 years, together they created a home with open door that welcomed neighbors and newcomers, family and friends. He embodied a gentle love as a husband, brother, and father. “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” 1 John 4:7.
