John was born on November 7, 1949, to Virgil and Ann Sharp in Santa Monica, California. After graduating from Santa Monica High School in 1967, he attended the University of Southern California where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. After college, he began working for the Fluor Corporation as a process engineer and remained with the company for over 45 years.
His career brought many opportunities to travel and experience other cultures around the world. It also prompted him to move several times in the States. After one such move to Wheeling, West Virginia, John met Barbara Shaffer, the love of his life. They married on August 6, 1977 at First Baptist Church. In 1979, John accepted a transfer to Houston, Texas where they welcomed their first child, Rebecca, and later their second child, Victoria Sharp. John and Barbara resided in Sugar Land, Texas up until the time of his death.
John was an avid reader with a great thirst for knowledge on a wide variety of subjects. As a result, he had a wealth of knowledge to share on almost any given topic. He also had a strong understanding of mathematics and the way things worked. He always enjoyed imparting his knowledge and was never boastful or condescending. Aside from reading, he also enjoyed playing games like Bridge and Trivial Pursuit, using new technology, conversing on current affairs and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Above all, he prioritized his faith in God. He took every opportunity to instill this faith in his children and share with others through Bible studies and a weekly ESL class that he helped to lead.
John was preceded in death by parents Virgil and Ann Sharp and brother Gordon Sharp. He is survived by his wife Barbara Sharp, children Rebecca Kline (Paul) and Victoria Sharp, grandchildren Elliana Kline, Evelyn Kline and Emilia Kline, in-laws and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for a donation to be made to the Boys and Girls Country https://www.boysandgirlscountry.org/donate/ or donating books to a local classroom/library in memory of John William Sharp.
