Kerry's earthly interment will take place at the Texas Aggie Field of Honor in College Station, Texas.
Kerry was born on August 25,1957 into the loving home of James and Patti McFee in Houston, Texas. His sister, Kellye, joined the family in 1960. Kerry’s elementary years were filled with Little League baseball, vacations to Colorado, church activities and his mother’s many Shetland Sheepdogs. He developed his passions for music and basketball during his teen years. He breezed through the academics of high school and decided to pursue Mechanical Engineering in college.
Kerry enrolled at Texas A&M University in 1975 and began a methodical journey through the curriculum, doing well and never wavering from the goal of becoming an engineer. During those years he developed many friendships, some of which were deep and continuing throughout the rest of his life. He also became a tenacious supporter for all Fightin’ Texas Aggie Sports, especially football. During college, Kerry spent summers working in Houston, earning a little money and more importantly, further developing life skills and hands-on understanding of diverse technologies, from telephone networks to oilfield drilling. In 1979, Kerry graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Over the years, he enjoyed numerous opportunities to return to College Station for various engineering conferences, allowing him to remain connected in a fulfilling way.
Kerry’s distinguished 44-year career with Fluor started on January 20, 1980 as a Control Systems Engineer. After achieving the state mandated years of engineering work experience, Kerry obtained his Texas Professional Engineering License for both Control Systems and Mechanical. Kerry’s technical expertise and leadership grew through the years; ultimately he performed his position as Control Systems Director with exceptional skill. Kerry always made a point to share his expertise and experience by mentoring others. Kerry also served as Fluor’s representative on the Steering and Advisory Committees for the Mary J O’Connor/Texas A&M Instrumentation & Automation Symposium, the American Petroleum Institute Subcommittee on Instruments & Controls as well as Voting Committee Member for numerous API Recommended Practices. He was a reviewer of the Construction Industry Institute’s consortium for Process Industries Practices.
Kerry was always in great demand by Fluor Project Management and even more so for the intricate, world class, mega scale projects requiring the coordination of overall engineering /design execution across multiple teams and/or engineering companies at different locations worldwide. Most of Kerry’s projects were located in the US; however, he had one international assignment in Saudi Arabia and made many business trips to Fluor’s Manila office. The facilities associated with his projects covered a very broad spectrum of industries including refining, chemical, petrochemical, gas compression, LNG, and nuclear. Although each new project brought with it unique challenges, Kerry was always up to meeting the challenge. He put in whatever long hours and hard work were needed to make his project successful, even as project schedules and budgets became more demanding over the years.
Kerry had a very impactful and rewarding professional career at Fluor. Kerry made many, many lifelong friendships with Fluor coworkers, supplier representatives, clients and other acquaintances that he crossed paths with around the world.
Kerry met Sue Russell at Fluor Engineering, Inc. through friends/co-workers. They began dating in 1987 and were married from 1991 -2011. They settled in their first home in Sugar Land in 1992 and welcomed their first son, Kyle, in 1993. Brett followed in 1995 which made their family complete. 1997 brought the unexpected medical event of Kyle suffering a stroke due to a rare cerebra-vascular disease, Moyamoya. Many of the following years focused on Kyle’s recovery, but efforts were made to give both boys a full and normal life with seasonal sports, time with family & neighbors and many wonderful vacations. One particularly awesome vacation was a roadtrip through W. Texas to New Mexico (Carlsbad Caverns, Roswell), to the Four Corners and SW Colorado (Mesa Verde), then Utah's Canyonlands and Arches National Park. The next week took them to Colorado where they met Kerry's family at Young Life's Trail West to celebrate his parent's 50th wedding Anniversary. Kerry involved the boys in Y Guides, Cub Scouts (Pack 1882), and Boy Scouts (Troop 659) - with both boys earning their Eagle rank. He was a dedicated Assistant Den Leader and Assistant Scout Master. As Kyle and Brett participated in Naval Jr ROTC during high school, Kerry increased his volunteer positions to include Jr ROTC. The family attended church at Sugar Creek Baptist Church; Kerry and Sue helped out with Sunday School for young children.
Kerry always found time to enjoy life with his coworkers. Kerry was athletic and loved sports; in his earlier years at Fluor, he could be found playing pickup basketball games with fellow Fluor friends. Then as everyone’s body “matured” and recovery was taking longer and longer, beach volleyball on Fluor’s sand courts became the next sport of choice, and then lastly the friendly competitions ultimately moved to kickball (yes, the same as played in grade school). Golf also became a favorite of Kerry’s when he joined the Fluor Happy Hackers.
Kerry experienced many memorable moments with his friends over the years, including: Guadalupe River camping/float trips, diving in Cozumel, happy hours, “Parties on the Patio” at Fluor, skiing in Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone and Squaw Valley, ISA Expos, Texas A&M football games and reunions, Manila karaoke nights, and even Game 2 of the 2005 World Series in Chicago. Kerry was particularly fond of live music, mostly rock and blues, and he attended numerous concerts over the years, including Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Asia, ZZ Top, Pink Floyd tribute bands, YES, Texas Flood, and many more. Kerry was especially appreciative of excellent guitar playing, and he was even known to break out his own guitar on rare occasions and play a favorite tune or two for his friends.
Kerry was Christina Ng’s best friend, companion, best handy-man and emotional supporter. He often put her needs before his own needs. The two attended Sugar Creek Baptist Church regularly and the 3-D Sunday School class where they learned about archaeology and biblical history. Kerry and Christina met other members who became their good friends. Kerry often demonstrated keen insights and in-depth knowledge of the Bible and history. He would have been awarded Valedictorian if the award were to be given out in the class. Kerry was very involved in many of Christina’s extended family gatherings. Together with her two daughters, they traveled to Asia, Europe, the Caribbean and North America. They all planned to visit China in the Summer of 2025. The two never decided to tie the knot.
Our family will be forever grateful for Jeramie Wooten, Brian Cross and John Jackson for going above and beyond on September 16 to keep Kerry breathing a few minutes longer. His Creator called him to his heavenly home that day but Kerry’s earthly legacy lives on: through his exceptional sons, Kyle and Brett, through the safe operation of the projects he designed and through the wonderful memories each of us treasure today.
