Matthew navigated through life the way he drove—eyes wide open and always looking straight ahead. Born in Pontiac, Michigan, to James DeLongchamp and Pamela Coe, he was a happy and vivacious baby. In his toddler years, he was lovingly adopted and raised by Pam and the late David Coe.
Active and athletic from an early age, Matt tried his hand at many sports, including swimming, football, baseball, tennis, skateboarding, and his favorite—ice hockey. While living in Michigan, he attended several prestigious hockey camps. His adventurous spirit and competitive drive stayed with him throughout his life. There were few challenges Matthew would back down from—including movie trivia.
His educational journey led him to Southwest Texas State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. He later received a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Houston. Before climbing into the driver’s seat of his beloved big rig, Matthew wore many hats—bartender, restaurant manager, and service manager among them. He had a natural gift for connecting with people. Through these experiences, he developed a lifelong love of cooking, storytelling, and bringing those he loved together over good food and drinks.
In 2008, he married his best friend and the love of his life, Eva. Together they built a beautiful life filled with laughter, shared passions, and adventure. They enjoyed sports, motorcycles, and RVing, creating memories wherever the road took them. Their greatest accomplishment was raising their son, Keoni Hilinai, who was Matthew’s pride and joy. He poured his heart into fatherhood and was deeply devoted to caring for, protecting, and cheering Keoni on in all things.
Matthew adored their dogs and treated them as family. Whether riding along, lounging at home, or greeting him at the door, they were constant companions and faithful friends.
He now joins in eternal rest those who went before him. Matthew was preceded in death by his adoptive father, David Coe; his grandparents, Richard and Marian Livingston and Fred and Selena DeLongchamp; and many beloved aunts, uncles, and extended family members.
He is survived by his loving wife, Eva; his precious son, Keoni; his mother, Pamela; his birth father, Jim DeLongchamp (Barbara); his brothers, David and Joshua; his sister, Emily (John) Hickman; his nephews, Waid and Miles Hickman; and his niece, Marlowe Coe. He is also survived by his aunts Suzanne (Tim) Smith, Debra Navarre, and Mary (Tim) Tynan; his uncles Mark (Bonnie) Livingston, James (Kari) Livingston, and Michael (Kate) DeLongchamp; and many cousins.
Matthew’s strength, determination, and deep love for his family will be remembered always. He lived boldly, loved fiercely, and leaves behind a road well traveled.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly invites those who wish to honor Matthew’s memory to contribute to the GoFundMe established to support Eva and Keoni. The link may be found below.
