Pines was born on September 17, 1924, in Marshville, N.C. daughter of the late Robert Ray Carpenter and Kizzie Caudle Carpenter. She moved to Charlotte where she met the love of her life, Sam in 1945. They were married April 19, 1946, and shared 54 years of a loving marriage. Pines was a devoted wife, Mother, and Grandmother. Her focus in life was nurturing and serving those in need. She dearly loved her huge vegetable garden and spent much time cooking, freezing, and canning those vegetables to share with family and friends. No matter who she encountered she made a point to speak and make people feel welcome.
Her Faith and Church were a very vital part of her life. She was a member of Thomasboro Presbyterian Church where she was a Deacon, President of Women of the Church, Circle leader, Choir member and Sunday school member. In 1976 she was presented an Honorary Life Membership to the Women of the Presbyterian Church. When her church merged with Pleasant Grove Presbyterian, she became an active member there. After moving to Sugar Land in 2002 Pines joined First Presbyterian Church, Sugar Land where she was a member for the last 20 years. Active in the community Pines was a member of the American Legion Auxillary, a veteran’s service organization for over 60 years.
In addition to her parents, brother and sisters, Pines was preceded in death by her husband, the late Sam Long. Surviving are her daughter, Carol and husband William Lloyd of Southlake, Texas, Granddaughter Allyson and husband, Charlie Daigle of Sugar Land, Texas, Grandson Jeff Lloyd and his wife Misti of Spring, Texas. Pines is also survived and blessed with four great-grandchildren, Joseph Liska (wife Ashleigh), Elizabeth Liska (husband Jonatan Flores), Kennedi Lloyd and Bristol Lloyd, all living in the Houston area. Five generations were created with the birth of Elizabeth’s daughter, Adilynn Liska on February 20, 2019. She is survived by several nephews and nieces in the Carpenter family and many dearly loved members of her late husband’s family.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 341 Eldridge Rd., Sugar Land, Texas 77478, or Altus Hospice, 11352 Sugar Park Ln., Sugar Land, Texas 77478.
