Harold was a native and lifelong resident of Sulphur and graduated from Sulphur High School, Class of 1955. He went on to attend McNeese State College (now McNeese State University) where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1960.
Harold had a distinguished military career in the United States Army. As an Ordinance Instructor who taught young men to shoot rifles and throw hand grenades, he achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After his service time was complete, he served in the Reserves. Harold’s passion for the proper use of weaponry led him to seek and garner certifications as an NRA shotgun instructor, handgun & rifle instructor, and a home defense instructor.
Harold was employed at Cities Service and Conoco throughout his entire career. He served in both refineries as a Lab Technician, and his dedication to foster the highest level of product quality was an constant thread that expressed success for the company and for him personally.
Harold’s outdoor hobbies were numerous and his mastery of most was recognized by his family and friends. These include softball, baseball, running, archery, deer & duck hunting, water & snow skiing, fresh & saltwater fishing, and shrimping in the Gulf of America.
Harold was a strong advocate and protector of both flora and fauna. His appreciation and love of cultivating flowers, gardens, and plants was only superseded by his passion for viewing and studying wildlife in the forests and wetlands of Louisiana.
Harold’s passion for mentoring young men through the venue of outdoor sports, particularly duck hunting, was displayed for years as he gave opportunity for many to enjoy the beauty of the coastal regions of southwest Louisiana with a front row seat.
Harold shared his gifts of administration and construction at Olivet Baptist Church as he assisted with the construction of their sanctuary in the 1970s. During his time as Deacon of Olivet, he participated in the leadership of the Royal Ambassadors (Boys Group) to assist with teaching and outdoor events which included archery training. In addition, he was a strong advocate of the church staff, and he worked diligently to ensure that they were cared for and compensated appropriately for their service and ministry at the church.
When Harold served as Deacon of First Baptist Church of Sulphur, he was led by their current pastor to truly seek to lead others to Christ. Dad witnessed everywhere he went and was able to share the saving grace of Jesus with total strangers in parking lots, restaurants, and shopping centers. For decades, Harold proved that witnessing to a world that needed Christ was his calling, and even with his last words, he continued to boldly share the love of his Lord to all within the sound of his voice.
Harold’s home church is Maplewood First Baptist Church. It is here that he and his wife, Theresa, formed strong bonds of friendship and performed humble acts of service alongside the church staff and membership of the church. Their faithful attendance and participation were an encouragement and support for their fellow worshipers and people seeking the love of Christ from others, within the city and outside the scope of Sulphur.
