Jim was a native of Brookhaven, Mississippi and had been a resident of Sulphur since the 1950's. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Battle for Iwo Jima and the Invasion of Normandy. He was a graduate of the University of Mississippi. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, the United States Golf Association, and the Lake Charles Country Club. He was a professional golfer and often taught golf lessons and repaired golf clubs for others. Jim retired from PPG in 1982 after many years of service as an engineer which led him to work in various countries all over the world.
Marie was a native of Haynesville, Louisiana and had been a resident of Sulphur since 1985 when she and Jim married. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lake Charles. She enjoyed cooking and gardening, especially flowers and belonged to a local artist guild. Marie retired from PPG in 1987 after many years of service as an accountant.
Survivors include their daughter-in-law, Mona Batts of Sweetlake; grandchildren, Paul Batts of Austin, Texas and Julie Marie Batts of Sweetlake; great-grandson, Brennan Batts; nephew, Wilson "Sonny" O'Quin of New Orleans; niece, Wanda Miller and husband, Billy of Lafayette; and Jim's brother, Ralph Butler of Houston, Texas. They are preceded in death by their son, Dennis Wayne Batts; Marie's sister, Bea O'Quin; and Jim's siblings, Roy, Ray, Claude, Cabe, Billy, and Delton Butler, and Vera Drude.
Their funeral services will be held together at 2:30 p.m. Monday, January 12, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Bruce Baker will officiate. Jim will be buried in Orange Grove Cemetery in Lake Charles beside his former wife, Catherine and Marie will be buried in Old Town Cemetery in Haynesville beside her former spouse, Carl Edward Batts. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Sunday and from noon until the time of service Monday in the funeral home.
