Janet Yvonne Joiner

She was born on June 6, 1937 in Golconda, Illinois. She graduated from Pope County Community High School, Golconda, IL in 1955 and from Southern Illinois University in 1959 with a BA degree majoring in art education and minoring in English. She was a devoted teacher and taught in Illinois, Augusta, Ga., and Pittsburgh, Pa. before moving to Sulphur in 1984 where she taught in private schools for many years prior to her retirement from teaching. She was an active member of Henning Memorial United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School (Seekers Class), was a member of the choir, and a member of the prayer group. She was a loving wife and a loving mother to her children. She was an excellent teacher and was recognized by her former students wherever she went when they crossed paths.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Larry Joiner; 1 daughter, Sandra and husband Walter Ptashnik from Apopka, Florida; 1 son, Dean of Houston, Texas; 1 sister Paula Faulkner living in Ridgeway, Illinois; 1 brother Thomas Wright and wife Amy living in Evans, Georgia; 2 grandchildren, Jill Ptashnik and Stephen Ptashnik and 1 great grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul W. Wright and Helen M. Wright of Golconda, Illinois.

Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10 at Henning Memorial United Methodist Church. The Rev. Doug Cain will officiate. Interment will follow at Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss. Visitation will be 4 – 8 p.m.

on Monday, June 9 at Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home and will resume on Tuesday at Henning Memorial United Methodist Church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
