He attended the University of Florida before being drafted.
He served in the Army Medical Corp from 1943 - 1946. He received his medical degree
from Tulane University in 1951. He opened his practice in Vinton and was one of the
doctors to open West-Calcasieu Cameron Hospital in Sulphur in 1953.
Raymond was a member of the Vinton Lion’s Club and served on the Vinton Drainage
Board for many years. He was the Vinton High School sports team doctor, for many
years, always looking forward to the Friday night lights! He was an attending physician
at Delta Downs Race Track during racing season. Raymond retired from practice in
1989. During retirement he enjoyed spending time at his beach house, visiting with his
grandchildren and watching his beloved Vinton Lions and Dallas Cowboys.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gwen, his daughters Susan, Kathy and
Carol and 5 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son Buddy.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 3rd, at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church in
Vinton. Visitation will be held before the service from 10:00a-11:00a and then after the
service a gathering in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
the ASPCA or St. Jude’s Research Hospital. The family would like to thank Heart of
Hospice caregivers Courtney Erbelding, Stephanie Thomas and Rena Gaspard for their
kindness and compassion and Susan Smith, a nurse in Dr. Turner’s office for her
exceptional care.
