Sunland Memorial Park, Mortuary & Cremation Center

Alice Mason, age 97, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024.

Alice was born July 8, 1927 to William and Rose Rosen and grew up in The Bronx, NY. She had a younger brother, Arthur, and one dog, Ginger. ("Does Ginger bite?" people would ask. "No," Alice would respond, "Ginger snaps.") Her apartment was around the corner from where Alice went to elementary and junior high school. This is the same school that Ralph Lauren went to and where Penny Marshall also went. She then matriculated from Hunter College High School and Hunter College. She later received a Master's Degree from Lehman College.

Alice worked for the Laboratories and Research Division of the New York State Department of Health and was part of the team that developed the drug Nystatin. The drug has been in continuous use since 1953, primarily as an anti-fungal. Alice changed her career from biology to teaching and remained a New York City public elementary school teacher in The Bronx until she retired and moved to Sun City West. As a teacher, Alice was a pioneer by being one of the first in the New York City Public School system to be certified to teach sex education.

Alice married Herbert Mason in December 1950 and they remained happily wedded until his death in 1994. Alice is survived by her two sons: Robert and Wayne Richard and their spouses.

Over the years, Alice traveled all over the world. She traveled cross country several times and there is not one state in the continental US that Alice hasn't been to without an AAA Trip-tik in hand.

Alice was an eclectic foodie and a lifelong theatergoer. Alice had a fabulous life and left nothing remaining on her bucket list. She will be missed by the countless people whose lives she touched directly and indirectly worldwide.
