Donald Ernest Hammer entered this world July 7, 1923 as a 10lb. bouncing baby boy. Growing up in Des Moines Iowa, he met and married his High School Sweetheart. Don married Betty Lou Riley on April 24, 1943, and then shipped out to the Mediterranean Sea as a Coast Guard Mechanic.
When WWII was over, Don and Betty both raised 3 children: Michael Hammer of Colo. Spgs, CO, Nancy Schmidt of Colo. Spgs, CO and Scott Hammer of Glendale AZ. Don was a retired bank President at “The Bank of Fountain Valley” and “The Bank at Broadmoor” in Colorado Springs. Upon retiring in 1985, he and his wife lived the good life in Sun City. He was active in his Church, American Lutheran Church of Sun City, both in the choir and as an usher. Up until a few months ago, Don attended the Bible Study on Monday mornings. Golf was one of his passions with the other being gardening. He grew and canned excellent pickled beets. He also canned some wonderful strawberry jam.
Don was quite proud of his children and from them he has 5 Grandchildren, one that has preceded him in death, and 4 Great Grandchildren. He passed from this world Sept. 8, 2014 to be with God. We will miss him.
