She was born to her parents Carolyn (Franklin) Johnson and George Johnson on December 7, 1949 in Newark, New Jersey. Gloria later attended East Orange High School in East Orange, New Jersey where she graduated with the class of 1970.
Gloria was a very spiritual woman who would read her bible daily and marked her favorite passages as she read. She enjoyed creating new memories with her loving husband Fred, spending time with her family and enjoyed the time she spent with her beloved sister and best friend, Emily. In her free time, she enjoyed watching Judge Judy and other court shows.
Not only did Gloria care for her family, but she cared for her community and others. Working in healthcare was one of Gloria's passions. She was a highly educated medical professional with her MBA. She achieved a long standing and successful career as a Registered Nurse and Paramedic Coordinator in the Banner Boswell Community. She began her career at Banner in 1997. Gloria was lovely, smart and a true Emergency Room Professional were she was often referred to as "The Singing Nurse".
During her time as a registered nurse, Gloria had been recognized for her strong leadership skills and was awarded and named liaison between Banner Boswell Medical Center and the West Valley Emergency Medical Services Community. She was able to lead programs that provided quick treatment of those experiencing heart attacks and strokes. Gloria's knowledge extended to over 60 paramedics in the Sun City, El Mirage, and Tonopah Valley Fire Departments. Gloria was also a board member for the Sun City Fire District. She felt pride when helping others in their greatest time of need and experienced great satisfaction when she saw her patients improving in her care.
Gloria was a great example to others. She had shared her passions and talents with others and was truly committed to helping and serving her community. She was and is a true leader.
Gloria leaves behind her husband, Frederick Douglas Powell, daughter, Shakiera Mindy Helenic, and sister, Emily. She dearly loved and celebrated her grandchildren Grace and Michael John Helenic. She was also a friend, mother and grandmother to Fred's wonderful family and children Kecia, John, Michele, Geia, as well as their beautiful children. They will all miss her greatly.
