93 of Sun City passed away on June 5, 2011. Irving was born in the Bronx, New York on August 20, 1917 to Benjamin and Bertha Neuman Schwartz. Irv was a vibrant, strong-willed, fiercely intelligent man with a passion for life which never ebbed. Irv’s philosophy was to work hard and keep learning throughout life. A construction laborer from the age of 13, he eventually became owner of a very successful building contracting company. He built the first high-rise building on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, and managed projects in Mexico, Philadelphia, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, and Baltimore. He taught the first architecture course in the country, at Pratt University in New York, in the late 1940’s. Irv was an honored member of the Stopnitzer Young Men’s Benevolent Association and served in WWII in the Air Force Core of Engineers.
Irv was an inspired cook. His spice cabinet was a cornucopia, his culinary creations full of complex flavors. No dish was ever the same twice. He became famous for his garlic dill pickles, which were enjoyed by friends and associates all over the country. In some circles, he is affectionately referred to as Irv the Pickle Guy. An avid dog lover, he was especially fond of his collie Chips and his two Brittany Spaniels, Lady and Lady II. Irv will be greatly missed by his beloved family: daughter Susan Paschkes and son in law Benjamin Paschkes, of Mount Laurel NJ; grand daughter Olivia Paschkes of Clarksburg, NJ; and his beloved dog, Lady II, of Sun City, Arizona. Arrangements under the direction of Sunland Memorial Park, Mortuary & Cremation Center, Sun City, AZ.
