With great sorrow, the family of John mourns the passing of a remarkable man on December 19, 2024 at his home. Born November 8, 1930 in Ironwood MI, he led a full life that profoundly touched the lives of all fortunate enough to know him.
Following his graduation from Ironwood High School, John served his country in the Korean War. Upon honorable discharge from active duty, he attended Michigan State University through the G.I. Bill and graduated with high honors as a Mechanical Engineer. As the first in his family to attend college, he inspired his brothers to do the same, which began a very large number of college graduates in the extended family.
He worked his entire career for Chrysler, finishing with managing the Chrysler Proving Grounds in Arizona, where he retired. During his tenure, he participated in contract testing for the DeLorean Motor Company and for the M1 Abrams Tank designed by Chrysler Defense, and helped to introduce the world to a revolutionary new vehicle concept: the Minivan, which ultimately led to the SUV. However, he always had soft spots in his heart for his first car, a Nash, and the Plymouth Super Bee.
John had a knack for everything mechanical, being able to build or fix anything. He was known for his invention of a remarkable mole trap. With his love of music, he could always be found tinkering on something with a song on his lips—singing, humming, or whistling. This could often irritate his wife, Carolyn, who would exclaim “Oh, John”.
John’s greatest love was his family, followed by his friends and community. He was known for his unwavering kindness, selflessness, and joyful spirit. He was very active in his church, serving as Elder, Trustee, President and many other positions. Similarly, he served his community in civic organizations such as the Optimist Club, volunteered as a tutor in schools, and helped out wherever and whenever an organization was in need of his many talents.
John will be lovingly remembered by his adoring family, including children Kurt (Karen), Karl (Cristy), Kraig (Tammy); grandchildren Katie, Elizabeth, Jacob, Ryan, Lucas, Daniel, and Garrett; brothers Dick and David, and a large extended family. His joyful spirit, humor, and unwavering love will forever resonate in the hearts of those he touched.
Friends and acquaintances alike were drawn to John’s magnetic personality, cherishing his companionship, and benefiting from his invaluable advice and guidance. His legacy of compassion and generosity will continue to inspire generations to come.
A celebration of John’s life will take place on Saturday, March 8 at Crown of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West AZ, at 11:00 a.m. MST where we will honor his memory and reminisce about the beautiful moments shared with him. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
