Kay was a close friend of mine at high school in Kenyucky and I cherish the memories of our times together.  How fortunate we were to have her in our lives.

To Kay's family-
I had the privilege of working with Kay 1996 to 1998.  We were teamed together as school nurses.  We came from very different backgrounds-- she from the South and I from the NE, yet we had many things in common, especially that we were both adoptive mothers. I had known for some time that she had significant health problems.  She has been on my pilgrimage prayer list and will remain on it for as long as I am still able to walk and travel.  She was a fine Christian lady, and an outstanding person.  She has earned a special place in heaven, I am sure!  Knowing her caring and compassionate nature, I would like to think of her as continuing her watch over her family and friends, especially in their fight for what is right.

Beautiful Lady, We know you miss her a lot. We are Sorry for your lost. May God bless you in your time of sorrow.

It was a privilege to know Kay as my Mother-In-Law. The way she loved her family is certainly an inspiration and she will be sorely missed.

For sometime, I imagine it hasn't been only me, dreading the time that one of our great friends passed away.  But, we are so sorry about Kay's passing away. I know that she has suffered for so long.  And in my heart she was able to live this long was a combination of her strong faith and the wonderful care you have so lovingly given her all these years.  And Bill, all of our great times for all these many years will never be forgotten.  The church functions and holiday dinners are forever sealed in our hearts. And going forward please know that we are here for you, so please don't hesitate to give us a call.  Your friendship has been very special to us.  And our children were saddened when they got the news.

Our grandmw was a very special lady.  She was strong, loving, and she cared for everyone she knew.  She came out to visit us and and was always there for us even when she couldn't walk.  She was the toughest person I have ever met.  She fought so hard for so long and kept a smile on her face.  I could never imagine the pain she had been going through.  And she still took the long trip out to see us.  She was a great example of how we should act as we grow into adults.  She was also a joy to be around.  One of our favorite memories of her was when we were in Hawaii she went boogie boarding with a snorkel on.  She was so happy to get back in the ocean.  We couldn't keep her out.  We miss her so much, but we are glad that she is in heaven with our Lord.

May the God of peace Himself bring you His peace and comfort and love during this difficult time.  Kay was so inspirational and such a loving lady to everyone.  I remember her courage, love and smile.  Christ just shined in her.  ?she is in Paradise with our Lord.

A Husband's Tribute to
KAY
I met this cute nursing student in 1958 at a friend's wedding, she was a bride's maid and I was an usher.  After my friend's wedding I started to think about this girl but didn't know her last name, I only knew Kay and some long German sounding name that I couldn't spell.  Fortunately a phone company operator figured out what her name and telephone number was.  So I called her and we started to date in 1959.  It wasn't long before it became apparent to both of us that we were falling in love.  I gave Kay my fraternity pin in the spring and that was the beginning of our unofficial engagement.  In the summer as my graduation from the University of Louisville was approaching I asked her to marry me, and she said yes, much to my surprise.  Why would such a pretty girl want to marry a poor engineering graduate?  We married on September 5, 1959 in Bowling Green, Kentucky and after a three day honeymoon in Nashville we went to live in South Bend Indiana where I was working for Bendix.  
Early in 1960 I was laid off from Bendix, we packed up and returned to Louisville to live with my parents while I looked for a job. A job offer came from a company in San Diego, California.  So we packed up what little we had and went to San Diego.  Neither one of us had ever been west of the Mississippi.  But Kay went without any complaints, I don't think that there are many young women that would leave family and friends and go on a journey with their husband.  Kay believed and lived that verse from the Bible Book of Ruth, “Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you, for where you go, I will go, and where lodge, I will lodge.  Your people will be my people and your God my God.”
We moved many times in different states and different towns from 1960 through 1966 before we bought our first house in Huntington Beach, California.  Even though we didn't know anyone or didn't have any family in the many areas we lived in Kay made every place we lived feel like a home that people would want to come to.  Kay always worked as a nurse wherever we lived, so she worked and kept a neat house.
Kay wanted to have children and be a mother, but it was not to be.  She endured many tests trying to determine why she couldn't get pregnant.  Finally when it became apparent that her medical issues were going to prevent her from becoming pregnant Kay came to me and said she wanted to adopt two babies.  The Lord used an adoption agency to provide two wonderful children, a boy in 1966 and a girl in 1969.  Kay was a wonderful mother and wife during those years as our children grew up and left the nest.
In January 1998 Kay and I retired to Arizona, again proving the she believed that verse from the Book of Ruth.  Kay left friends and a house we had lived in for thirty six years with many memories and moved to the desert for my health even though she loved the beach and the ocean.  Kay made many friends in Sun City West where she became involved with the church, Women's club, playing bridge, and Jazzercise.  As her health failed she became an example to all that knew her of a fighting spirit that would not complain or give up.  Even to her last days she was planning what to do for Thanksgiving 2013 and her desire to see her grandson play football.
Kay allowed me to take care of her for the last two years of her life.  It was an honor and privilege to minister to Kay and show her the love that she so richly deserved.
Your husband, children and grandchildren miss you so much, but we all have that sure hope that you now are in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with a perfect body, no more pain, no more suffering.  We all look forward to that time when we will all be together again.

We were so sorry to hear from Nancy Harrison, that Kay had gone to be with her Lord.  Our time at Christ Pres was a very special time, made extra special by people like Kay and you, Bill.  Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

My memories of Kay go back to sitting on the beach in the 80's.  And most recently the ma ny opportunities you gave me to be with Kay.  I am grateful for a special friend, and your support of maintaining that friendship.  We know that your loss is great and we admire your loving care of Kay, Thank you for giving her the hope God desires for all of His.

WE will all miss Kay!  The Lord must have been overjoyed to see her after all the ministering she did in doctor's offices and during hospital stays.  I'm sure many were influenced by her life.  I think that the following verse is appropriate for the both of you: "for God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints and do minister."

Kay Essig
My mother was a southern woman. Even though she left the South at age 21 for a journey west with my father, she had the essential quality of southern femaleness; warmth and sweetness balanced by an aristocratic toughness. If you have ever lived in the South, or even watched Gone With the Wind, you know the type. Kay had both Scarlet O'Hara's grit and ability to persevere, and Melanie's self-sacrificing grace. She was never faint of heart.
It is from my mother that that I learned how to throw a party. Kay has not cooked regularly for years, but when I was a kid, she made a mean casserole and could cook for a crowd. I like to think I carry the tradition of southern hospitality learned at my mother's side. She also drilled into me lessons like, “If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all.” Gentleness and compassion are character traits I hope to pass on to my children even though, with me, her lessons did not always stick. 
I have heard my mother described as kind, a disarming sweet lady. However, I believe that it is Kay's demonstration of a bulldog like inner strength and tenacity that best prepared my brother and I for life. If an autopsy were performed on her, I am convinced the doctors would find an organic, Kevlar-like substance lining her guts, or viscera, wherever toughness is centered in the female body. 
What is clear is the origin of her strength, which was her daily prayer and reading of scripture—the same source of our comfort now. 
Today, we celebrate Kay's life, her southern origin and western arc; the family and friends my mom and dad created together. We rejoice that he is with the same precious Jesus she has been in dialogue with for decades.
