He was married to Edith Mattal for almost 40 years. He now joins his late wife, who died in 1993. Larry and Edith had one terrific son, Lance, who survives him and will honor his memory. He is also survived by his many relatives who will really miss him. Teri and Donald Grady; Susan and Michael Mattal and their children, Monya and Brianna; Brian and Iris Mattal and their children, Ian and Brandon, and Arthur and Wendi Singer. Most of all he will be missed by his dear friend of over fifty years, Russ Robbins.
Larry Mattal was a teacher extraordinaire at Skyline High School in Oakland, CA until his retirement in 1986, He was loved by his students who, over the years after their graduations, celebrated his birthdays and special occasions with him even up until his passing. His heart did not have any boundaries.
He reached out to students in distress, and on occasion when necessary, he and his wife would take a high school student that was having major problems in their household to live in their house with free room and board until the student’s situation could be resolved.
Although he had many friendships over the years in California, in the 90’s he moved to Arizona to take advantage of the “heat” to alleviate his arthritis.
In Arizona he again easily made many loving and numerous friendships and enjoyed his membership at Temple Beth Shalom in Sun City where he became an active member and participant. His friends in Arizona will surely miss him as well.
Larry has always been a generous and philanthropic individual quietly meeting the needs of persons or organizations in need of financial support. He never asked for or required recognition for his service or contributions. With that in mind he has requested that in his memory, those who wish to make a donation, should make it to Temple Beth Shalom 12202 101st Ave. in Sun City, AZ 85351. Any and all donations would be appreciated.
Funeral services in California will be at the Chapel at the Home of Eternity at the top of Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, CA (5000 Piedmont Ave.) on Monday, July 29, 2019 at 11AM.
There will also be a Celebration of Life for Larry at Temple Beth Shalom in Arizona on Monday, August 5, 2019 at 11:30 AM with a meal of consolation to follow.
