Lucille (Lu) passed away peacefully on June 14, 2020 from natural causes. The only daughter of John and Kathryn Hansen, she was born in Cashton, WI on December 5, 1915. She had one brother, Norbert Hansen (Nub).
Her lifelong passion for music began in her eighth year when she received a piano for Christmas. Participation in school concerts, musicals and her brother Nub's dance band led to her wish to attend Lawrence College to study music, however, the effects of the Depression steered her to her second childhood passion … teaching. She attended La Crosse State Teachers College receiving her first teaching position teaching kindergarten and first grade in Spring Green WI. Additional class study and Lu's eternal patience (a trait that would be tested by her own children) led her to teaching special needs students.
After teaching for ten years in Wisconsin, Lu relocated to Chicago and took a job with the government where she was assigned as the secretary to Henry De Boer. She was very good at organizing but was less than proficient in shorthand or typing. That did not deter Hank from suggesting that she take a position in another office as he wished to date Lu.
Lu and Hank married in 1946 and their union produced four children; David, Mary Kay, Debbie, and Scott. During the many moves due to Hank's differing positions with Schlitz and the raising of four children, Lu's natural generosity, kindness, endless love, positive attitude and of course her remarkable patience was always on display. When Lu and Hank married, she added a love for golf and playing tennis to her lifelong passion of playing the piano, dancing and traveling. These interests continued to carry her after Hank's passing in 1990. In 1992 she married Andy Anderson, a second marriage for both of them. They shared 14 wonderful years before his passing in 2006. Lu and Andy made Grandview Terrace their base as they traveled often around the U.S. and several foreign countries. She also enjoyed her weekly bridge group, the community exercise classes, many rounds of golf with her lady friends and her daily glass of wine. Among her close friends and family, her common refrain when her glass was less than half full was “Just a touch” of wine.
Lu truly LIVED every day of her 104 years. She leaves behind the most cherished part of her life---her four children, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Memorials in Lu's honor may be made to: St. Mary's Food Bank 2831 N. 31st Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85009 or Hospice of the Valley 1510 E. Flower St. Phoenix, AZ 85014
