Nicholas was born on August 17, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York to Philip and Catherine (O'Mahony). Nicholas grew up in the 1940’s and 50’s and would enjoy what the time in midcentury America had to offer. Nicholas was known as a hard-working, kind-hearted, and loyal man whose steady presence and generous spirit will be deeply missed.
Nicholas dedicated his career to public service, joining the FDNY as a firefighter in December 1959. Through years of commitment and perseverance, he rose through the ranks and ultimately retired in July 1986 as Deputy Assistant Chief of Department—an achievement reflecting a lifetime of duty and leadership.
Beyond his work, Nicholas embraced life fully. Nicholas would marry MaryAnn (Cultraro) and the two would go on to have two children (Nicholas and Christa) and enjoy a wonderful and adventurous life together until MaryAnn’s passing in 2020. Nicholas loved his family and dedicated as much time as he could to them. He loved the outdoors and was an avid skier, international traveler, and golfer. He also enjoyed woodworking and took pride in being his own handyman, always ready to fix, build, or improve something with care and skill. He also loved to sing and was known to sing old standards and was in the chorus at his senior living place, The Hallmark. Nicholas made friends everywhere he went and was known for his warm smile and the sincere compliments he offered to everyone; he had small kindnesses that left lasting impressions.
Nicholas was predeceased by his loving wife MaryAnn; his parents Philip and Catherine (O'Mahony); his siblings, William, Philip (Joan), Henrietta, Michael (Ann), and Julia; and his brother in-law Sal.
Nicholas’s memory lives on through his children, Christa and Nicholas (Canyon); and his three grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister in-law, Camille; his nieces and nephews, Debra, Linda, Jeanine, Holly, Doug, Michael, Kerry, and Nancy; and many great nieces and nephews.
