It is with the deepest regret that I never had the chance to meet Pauline in person.  However, Frank, my next door neighbor and dear friend introduced me to Pauline (much to his chagrin) through the internet and, in my mind anyway, began a close, loving and very memorable friendship with her.  Poor Frank was tasked with passing messages back and forth; eventually Pauline and I also sent cards, emails, pictures, etc., and I had the privilege of getting to know this remarkable lady who rewarded me with the feeling of being accepted as part of "her family".  I know that in the short time that she and I had the opportunity to build a relationship she became very dear to my heart and I will remember her kindness, love, and acceptance to the day I die, and perhaps beyond.  To Frank, Cherie, Angie, Derk, and their respective families, I want to extend my heart felt condolences on the loss of this so loved lady.  In my view never more was the phrase "To know her was to love her" more appropriate than now.  It is heart warming to know that everyone who knew Pauline will have so many excellent memories to keep deep in our hearts like snapshots of a wonderful life!!

Auntie Pauline was so full of love and kindness. I will always remember the excitement in her voice and laugh when talking. I visited her and Uncle Jerry in 2016. She was so funny showing me this crystal that would sway in different directions, stopping the conversation to say “you are going to think I’m crazy” and giggle away.  Leaving, with fresh picked oranges and grapefruit from the neighbour,  arms full of stuffed animals and sweaters for the kids, a fur scarf and a violin for Malia. She told me that Malia (my daughter) was like her with music and a love for golf. She sure loved her family and friends and we all loved her immensely back.

It is heartbreaking that we no longer have our sweet and loving Auntie Pauline with us.  We always felt so loved even though we were not able to see each other very often.  She always remembered our birthdays, was interested in what and how we were doing, and we so looked forward to seeing them when they visited or we went to visit them.  She left me with the lesson to be strong when you need to and to be kind and loving.  I also make sure that all the little birds and animals have bird seed and something to eat while in my yard (like she did) as it makes me think of her. 

Pauline always came for family gatherings.  This was for her brother Vic's wedding in Winnipeg.

Thank you Aunty Pauline for all those years of Christmas cards and presents, (yes,even the checkered pants I got one year!)for never forgetting anybody’s birthdays and always sending a card. Those many miles you and Uncle Gerry travelled every year to come and visit family and always opening up your door to a visit when family would come down. 
You will always be remembered by your sweet kind soul. Too many stories to tell now but will always be fond memories forever.

Knowing my interest in military history they took me to the aviation museum in Mesa,Arizona for the day. 

My visit with Aunty Pauline & Uncle Gerry one year had us travelling from morning to night. 
One adventure was a trip to the Grand Canyon taking the old train from Williams,Arizona.

There were many trips to Las Vegas meeting up with family over the years which led to many happy times together. 

My parents told Aunty Pauline I was learning to play the trumpet in school. The next time they came down for a visit I was given a trumpet from them with the deal that if I ever stop playing I had to give it back. I think that was so I would continue playing it. After one season of playing it in school I found I didn’t have the lung capacity to blow the thing for very long without passing out so the next summer when they came to visit, I gave it back!!

Instruments were a big part of the Derin family and were always present at a family get together!

Frank Derin

Pauline was such a special person.  We just met her and  Gerald  about  10 years ago theough Frank,  who I went  to Sturgis  High School  with. Every time  they came to Palm Springs  or when we were passing  through  Phoenix  we met for  lunch and we had a great visit.  She treated  Pat and I like  family. We were honored to have known  her.

Every Birthday or Christmas Card contained photos and cute animal pictures.  These will be cherished , forever in our hearts
