

Thomas F. “Tom” Engelhardt, age 94 of Sun City West, Arizona, died on March 14, 2021. He was born on May 24, 1926, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to William and Norma Engelhardt. He was raised in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin where he attended St. Bernard’s Catholic Church School. Subsequently, he graduated from Marquette University High School in Milwaukee (1944), University of Wisconsin in Madison (1950) and George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C. (1958).
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Elizabeth Blais of New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1954. During his career he served as an intelligence officer for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, Chief Trial Counsel for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and as Deputy Legal Director for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He was admitted to the practice of law before the U.S. Supreme Court and in Virginia and the District of Columbia. He retired in 1982 and in 1983 moved to Sun City, Arizona. In his retirement he was active as an officer and board member of the Phoenix Catholic Diocesan Stewardship Council, Catholic Social Services of Phoenix, Sun City Community Fund, Sun City Community Council, Sundome Performing Arts Association, the Knights of Columbus and the Parish Councils of St. Clement of Rome Church and St. Elizabeth Seton Church both in Sun City. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Knights of Columbus and American Legion Arizona Post 62.
Tom was predeceased by his first wife Elizabeth “Lee” and also his second wife Alice Hamel. He is survived by his brother, John (Mary) Engelhardt of Minneapolis, Minnesota; his sister Susan (Gary) Zimmerman of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated for Tom at 10:00am on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, 9728 Palmeras Drive, Sun City, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of choice. To send condolences to the family please visit www.SunlandMemorial.com.
