Our dear sweet mother is now in Heaven, shortly after her 102nd birthday. She was still living alone in her own home until a series of mini strokes took her down in a 10 day period of time. She was a Navy WAVE in WWII and was a decoder and had been scheduled to be transferred to Hawaii the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked. She was adventurous and fiercely independent. She will be greatly missed but had been asking the Lord to take her to heaven for years and he finally did, peacefully in her sleep after she waited for me to return from a trip to see my twin brother. That night she clearly said “Goodbye Polly, Goodbye Polly” instead of Good night. Before those last words she could not speak in a clear fashion since the last mini stroke occurred. She knew and I knew and God took her home.
Patricia was born in Marshfield, Wisconsin January 1921 and lived there until after high school graduation. She then left home to explore the world outside of her small-town upbringing.
She joined the WAVES in the US Navy and served between 1942-1944. She was a decoder at Sandpoint Naval Station in the Seattle area and missed being transferred to Pearl Harbor by a day or so I believe I understand. Patricia so enjoyed the NAVY life that she encouraged her husband to make the NAVY his career instead of moving back to Texas. She enjoyed the different cities he was transferred to every few years.
Married January 1946 at Sandpoint Naval Station. Our father Loren (Tex) served 21 years in the Navy. He was on an air carrier in Hawaii at the time of the Pearl Harbor bombing. Being in the radar electronics arena, he spotted the planes coming in and was able to alert the Captain to get the ship out of port before the actual bombing occurred. Most of his Navy career was on the east coast Rhode Island, Norfolk Virginia, Jacksonville Florida and more often at Millington Naval Air Station out of Memphis, Tennessee. His last year was in Oakland, California and then on to the Seattle, Washington area when he went to work for FAA - Federal Aviation Association. Retiring about 15 years later in about 1975. He later passed in May 1992 just short of 72 years old after having lived a full life traveling in their motorhome and settling in to the Mesa, Arizona Area.
