As a World War II veteran, he served in the Army Air Corps.
Walter and Gloria McBride met while attending the same church in California. They were married on June 2, 1946, and had two sons, Rodney and Raymond and two adopted daughters, Claire and Carole Castell.
Walter’s career in the aviation industry provided the opportunity of travel and living abroad. His commercial aviation positions allowed the family of four to live in Honolulu, Hawaii, Jacksonville, Florida and Tokyo Japan before settling in Northern California.
His career with the Federal Aviation Agency began in 1962 as an air traffic controller before moving to Oklahoma City as a Flight Standards Instructor. From there he became Manager of Flight Standards District office in Southern California before retiring.
After retirement Walter did not sit back in a rocking chair. As a designated examiner for the FAA, he began giving check rides in business jets, and was Chief Pilot for Trinity Broadcasting Network. His ‘official’ retirement from aviation was in 1992.
His wife Gloria preceded his death in 2004. He is survived by his sons, Rodney and Raymond, daughters-in-law Donna and Marie, five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
