Thank you so much for being here. You all meant the world to Mom and Dad and somehow I know they are looking down on us today and are so happy you are here with us.

Mom and Dad gave us such a fairy tale life growing up in Aspen, landing here in 1953. Their childhood and very young adult life in Watertown, NY was always a very fond memory and we visited there often so Jill and I could know our grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles and family friends. Mom and Dad were the most loving and involved parents I knew--- fostering: acceptance, compassion and forgiveness. They were young when we moved to Aspen---- moving here because of Dad's 10th Mountain experience during WWII----so the four of us kind of grew up together. Jill was just two and I was five. Oh gosh--- we had so much fun and through it all Mom and Dad were the best and most devoted parents----- providing us guidance, comforting us, nurturing our development, and helping us learn to stand on our own. You who knew them as friends know they were devoted to you as well. We were so safe with them. I think one of the things I miss most is the unconditional love that Jill and I always knew we had, however, never took for granted because it was such a gift and the older I get the more I understand what a gift that is. 

If Mom and dad were standing here with us today---- I believe this is what they would say:
Savor every moment as it passes, always keep your faith and love in God, remain humble, embrace all that life has to offer, and celebrate the joy of everyday. Life is rich, beauty is everywhere, do things together and count your blessings---- every personal connection has meaning, and laughter is life's sweetest creation. 

We placed Mom and Dad at rest together, yesterday--- looking up at their Red Mountain home---- always known to us as Mount Way--- looking up at Hunter Creek-- our childhood playground----- Aspen Mountain--- where dad was the first director of the Aspen ski school-- and Independence Pass....... and now being surrounded by very dear friends who have gone before them and honored by you------ I pay my final respects.

To my/our beloved parents, grandparents and friends----- Mom/Dad, Mimi/Papa, Betty/Bill

Your gentle guidance has immeasurably influenced all that I have done, all that I do, and all that I will ever do.
Your sweet spirit is indelibly imprinted on all that I have been, all that I am, and all that I will ever be.
Thus, you are a part of all that I accomplish and all that I become.

And so it is when I help a neighbor, your helping hand is there also.
When I ease the pain of a friend, she or he owes a debt to you.
When I show a child a better way, either by word or example, you are the teacher once removed.

Because everything I do reflects values learned from you, any wrong that I may right, any heart that I may brighten, any gift I may share, or burden I may lighten, it is in its own small way a tribute to you.

Because you gave me life, and more importantly, lessons in how to live, you are the wellspring from which flows all good I may achieve in my time on earth.

For all that you are and all that I am and all that passes on to my loved ones---- because we received love--- we give it and so love continues..... I thank you Mom and Dad and I love and miss you as we all do------ rest well together.

We thank you for our childhood adventures and all that we shared,

Papa

I have three subjects with which I would like to touch upon as I comment about Bill Mason, --- who we all know as Papa.

First, I would like to begin, by reading the beginning of a email that Linda and I received the day after Papa's passing.  It is from a college fraternity brother and one of my best friends;

... on 27 January 2012, The United States of America lost another Hero. In this case, the loss was all too personal for you all, --- and for those of us outside the family who had the good fortune to know Bill Mason ... if only slightly.  During the few brief  times I was in his presence, I sensed a man of great strength and character, that I believe must have been forged in the fires of World War II, while serving in the Tenth Mountain Division. --- His legacy of Honor, Courage, and Commitment, and his devotion to his family will live on in the lives --- of all of you who were touched by him.                                   I --- thank God for him --- and our other heroes who stood tall at a time when our country ---   so desperately needed them.  

Tomorrow, I will be honoring his memory with a volley of 21 rounds from my M-1 Carbine."

I believe all of you know in what high esteem I hold all of our men and women in the Armed Services; whether they be current, or from the Desert Wars or from the Viet Nam era (of which many of us are Veterans) but ... the Men of World War II were a true "Band of Brothers." They went to war for Our Nation ... and not just for a tour of duty ... but until the war was over.             
  And now --- there are so few of them left.

I believe that Tom Brokaw described it so well when he call them ... the Greatest Generation.  I further believe that we ... have had one of the greatest times to live our lives, not just because of what they did in Europe  or  the Pacific, but also because of what they did when they returned home --- after the War ... to rebuild our Nation.

next ... and on to another memorial ...

Many of you were present ... over six years ago when I had the privilege of speaking at Betty Mason's, ... Mimi's, ... memorial.                     

My brother had reminded me of a passage that he spoke of at our Mother's funeral, some nine years earlier, about ... she not being gone, but just being in the next room ...  which lead me to the poem by Henry Van Dyke concerning "being gone from my sight" which I then read at Mimi's memorial. --- 
In that writing he speaks of a ship setting sail and as it approaches the horizon; someone exclaims, "look now she is gone"   ...  yet another voice (on the other side) exclaims   "look here she comes."  Well, when I read that, at that time, it was very meaningful ... but - not - yet - personal, as to the people on the other shore.  Well, now it is personal, --- for I know that Mimi is --- on that other shore saying .....                                             
                    "look here he comes."

 
... and finally, --- I will leave you with two Quick or Brief thoughts --- with quick being the operative word ...
Bill Mason lived two lives comment, 0 - 80 then the last 7 yrs
I will paraphrase what Linda said a few days after his passing: ...  his death is not a Tragedy, it is really more of a Blessing ---    (for he would not have wanted to live this way), but it is - such - a - Loss.  Although no one would have wanted him to linger in a long passing, it was - just - so  quick.  ---   
   With that in mind, I would like to leave us all with a quote from the ...            "Rubaiyat" of Omar Khayyam, which I believe speaks of "life" when he wrote:

And as the Cock crew,     those who stood before        the Tavern shouted ...

"Open then the door! 
You know how little time we have to stay,
And, once departed, may return no more."

To Linda and Bill, and all the Mason/Autrey Family…..

Yesterday morning, 27 January 2012, The United States of America lost another Hero. In this case, the loss was all too personal for you all, and for those of us outside the family who had the good fortune to know Bill Mason, if only slightly. During the few brief times I was in his presence, I sensed a man of great strength and character, that I believe must have been forged in the fires of World War II, while serving in the Tenth Mountain Division. His legacy of Honor, Courage, and Commitment, and his devotion to his family will live on in the lives of all of you who were touched by him. I thank God for him and our other heroes who stood tall at a time when our country desperately needed them. Tomorrow, I will be honoring his memory with a volley of 21 rounds from an M-1 Carbine. 

I know that words alone cannot possibly convey fully, the depth of my feelings of sorrow at this time, nor the gratitude I feel for his life. And yet there is also the comforting realization for those of us who truly believe what our Faith teaches us, that he has gone on to an eternal peace with Betty in a far better place. 

I wish that we could be with you all to celebrate this great life, but know that we will be with you in spirit, if not in person, on the 11th. Susie joins me in saying that our thoughts and prayers, and our love, will be with you all, in the coming days as you deal with your grief.

Dear Linda and Jill,

 I just heard of your father's passing a few days ago.  I had been thinking of him and how he was doing, called my good friend Anne Burrows at Mason and Morse and she delivered the news.  My heart and sympathies go out to you.  Your father was a good friend to me and a great father to you.

 I well recall the days when your Mom and Dad owned the Norway Lodge and a group of us from St. Paul stayed there over a couple of spring vacations.  Not only did your father give me my first pair of stretch pants (hand-me-downs) but your Mom and Dad seriously came to my rescue when I developed pneumonia and became extremely sick.  They went so far as to bring me to your house on Red Mountain while I recovered.  "I was so out of it", I don't recall that part, although I do recall bouncing Jill--- age 3 or 4--- on my knee at the Norway Lodge.

 It could easily be argued that Bill Mason was the one most responsible for me being able to settle in Aspen and thereby define my adult life.  Partially, through his example, I knew I wanted to live there and it was definitely through his influence that I was able to become a Broker at Mason and Morse.

 Your Dad was one of the stalwarts of the Aspen community whose passing will be marked by all of us who knew him.  He and his generation put Aspen on the map and made it the desirable place it soon became.

 Anne mentioned to me she thought your Dad passed away toward the end of January.  Curiously, that was about the time I began thinking so deeply about him.  I had wanted to get in touch with him to say "hello" and hopefully be able to stop and see him in Arizona if and when we traveled there this spring.  I knew he was living with you, Linda, but I had no contact information for you; neither did my friend Sam Mairs.

 Your father was a very good man, one whom I knew for some of my adolescent and all of my adult life and I shall always remember him with great fondness and gratitude.  My sincere sympathies to both of you.

Linda,

I hope you remember me, son of Clyde and Inez Clymer, brother of Bertha. I am saddened to hear of your Father's passing. In the late '50s, when my parents were managers of Norway Lodge, Bill often took me fishing, hiking, and on back country Jeep trips. Those memories and more of your Father, and his caring, giving ways, have stayed with me and influence my life to this day. I could go on with stories and wonderful words, but there is nothing I can say that you do not already know of the good and goodness that surrounded your Father. 

My wife and I bought a "getaway" place in Surprise a couple of years ago and are down there from time to time (retirement is in the works). Had I known your Father was 'just down the road' I would have loved to have visited him. Perhaps we could get together for a visit sometime when we are down.

Please know that I share in your and Jill's sorrow and accept my condolences.

For those of you who don't know me, I am Bob Gaskins; and I am honored and humbled to be asked by Papa's family to say a few words at this celebration of his life. 

Bill Mason was my friend and role model.  Mere words will never begin to describe the immensely positive impact of Bill's life on any of us fortunate enough to have known him. The list of superlatives is long and the uplifting stories are endless. 

In simple terms, he was a Christian man who walked the talk each and every day.  Life was not about him.  He embodied the Golden Rule and he exuded relentless positive energy.  He was a kind soul who was helpful and generous to everyone.  His love of people was reflected in the way that others felt about him – He was loved by all who knew him. 

Bill was a terrific skier.  He skied with the same smooth and graceful form whether he was in two feet of fresh powder at Snowmass or zipping down a double-black-diamond chute on Ajax.  He even skied the same way leading a pack of kids down the slopes of Buttermilk while wearing his Mr. Squirrel costume, complete with a giant head which I still have no idea how he could see out of.  The best ski instruction in the world was to follow Bill on the mountain, and he always seemed to adjust his speed so as to never leave any of us behind. 

Bill always found natural ways to maintain his great physical condition. On his lunch hour in the summer, he would many times walk home to have lunch with Betty – half way up Red Mountain. Or, in the winter, he would climb on his Nordic skis to the top of Ajax, eat the sandwich that he carried in his pocket, and then ski back to town. As he got older, he stayed in better shape than most people half his age. 

Bill could go for an all day hike and not look the least bit tired at the end.  He just loved it, especially when there was no trail, and he could chart his own course across the mountain ranges.  And he would always have that grin on his face and twinkle in his eye, and something positive to say – even after running a 26 mile marathon in just four hours at the age of 60.  Now that I am that same age, I have a profound appreciation of what an accomplishment that really was. 

Bill was a minimalist who traveled light, whether it was a backcountry hike or a car trip across the country.  On the trail, he would frequently carry his fishing rod and catch some trout for dinner.  He said that you had to think like a fish to catch them, and he never came up empty. 

Bill was smart and witty – but also extremely modest and humble.  The concept of ego never crossed his mind.  He was a successful businessman and he contributed greatly to Aspen's growth into a world-class community.  However, you would never hear about his successes from him.  He knew everybody, including some celebrities – but he never name-dropped.   He did well financially – but he lived modestly.  Extravagance was not in his DNA – but he was all class.  His generosity was legendary – but his focus was on appreciating the kindness in others. 

Anyone who knew Bill was forever uplifted by his positive attitude and his generous spirit.  He focused on making every day count.  Bill's Christian faith was his foundation – To know Bill was to know a man who lived his faith.  His first priority was always his family – He was the best husband, father and Papa in the world.  He was a man's man in every respect; and more-over, a best-in-class human being.  And, he was a friend to all.  Simply put, he was just a really nice guy who had a genuine love for people and a joy of living each day to its fullest.

Bill was the first man who spoke to me about the importance of his Christian Faith in his everyday life.  I would sometimes ask him how he dealt so successfully with challenges and adversity.  His answer was always very simply that he relied on his Faith and trust in God through Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Bible.  Through his Faith, Bill always focused on the good times and on positive experiences, even when others would have been consumed by the negatives.  He never allowed himself to be drawn into the dark side of life. His approach to living is a model for all of us.  A foundational reason that I am a born-again Christian today is because of the witness and example of Bill Mason in my life.

When I would see Papa at events for our son Billy over the years, he would always have something positive to say to me, usually reminiscing about skiing or one of our hiking trips together.  The night before his auto accident in December 2004, Papa reminded me of one of the most special backpack trips that he and I had done together in the early 80's.  He talked about it as if it was just yesterday and he had a real joy in his voice and that same twinkle in his eye.  Not long before that, he had called me to offer his heartfelt condolences when both of my parents passed away.  Most ex-father-in-laws don't do any of this.  But Bill Mason participated in life at an entirely different level than most people.  He lived life through a positive lens and was not about judging others.  He was a channel for the Lord's grace. 

I believe that some people are angels whom the Lord has asked to support and guide the rest of us in our lives, particularly those of us who might otherwise have been lost sheep forever.  I believe that Bill Mason is one of those angels. 

Karen, Linda and Bill, and Jill and Bill – 
You have all done an extraordinarily fine job of caring for Papa over the past seven years, along with loving support from Billy, Stephani, Mason, Jacqueline and Duncan.  Most people in Papa's situation would have spent this time in a nursing home or worse.  Each of you, separately and collectively, would have never considered such an alternative for him, no matter what the personal sacrifice would have been for yourselves.  Your unwavering love and devotion for Papa are an example of the best in people and a testament to God's grace.  Sometimes the Lord presents us with monumental challenges in life to see how we will do.  He must be very pleased indeed with your loving care of Papa.  As hard as it is for all of us to lose Papa in this life, we can be assured that he is in the best of all places right now – in Heaven with the Lord and with Betty – and that he has no more pain or worries or sadness – only love and happiness from now on.   May the Lord's blessings be with each of you.

Dear Jill,
I did not know your father well at all, only having met him one time.  He was visiting with you and Bill and out for the day having lunch with you in Niwot.  Despite the limitations that his auto accident had left him with, when you introduced me to him, he was gracious in his response.  More importantly, when he learned that I was in treatment for ovarian cancer his response was compassion for me with no mention of the sadness that this horrible disease had brought to his family.  In that moment I only glimpsed his grace and his courage.
That was five years ago this coming spring.  Since then, never having met him again, I have seen those strengths exhibited in you over and over.  I have listened and watched from the sidelines as you and Bill gave so much of your time and energy to caring for your father.  I know that your sister and her husband have made the same effort on his behalf.  In addition he has had wonderful caregivers who have stayed with him and the rest of the family throughout this long period of time in which he has needed much more care and support from all of you than he ever would have wanted to ask for.
I don't believe that kind of love, devotion, commitment and responsibility just happens.  I know that it was a reflection of the kind of people your parents were and the way they raised their daughters to be.
I know you were very proud of your father and I am absolutely sure that he was, and always will be, very proud of all of you.

Awhile ago we went to a slide show about the history of the 10th Mountain Division.  I thought of you guys and your Dad.  I was mesmerized by him. What a mark he made passing through. Didn't he? He influenced you guys and us and many.  I'm hoping you are both okay and doing well.  We are thinking about you.

Papa, I miss you greatly. I feel it is not right to say goodbye, it is just see you later. Having the opportunity to see you before you went to join Mimi was memorable. I think back of the times we had when I was a kid. I loved hearing stories of your time in the 10th mountain division. You are a great role model to so many. One of my best memeories was when I attempted to run with you while I was in training for cross country, could not keep up with you if I had too; and your attempts to teach me to fly fish. All in all, you will be greatly missed. It does my heart good to know you are with Mimi and are at peace. Gives me peace to believe that you both are looking down on me every day, and believe that you can be proud. Thank you for everything. Love you and miss you!

Papa, it is hard for us to say goodbye to such a wonderful man; however, I know that you are at peace with the lord, and with Mimi.  For that, I am pacified and grateful.  We will all miss you immensely, but are lifted up by the teachings and memories that you blessed us with throughout your life.  I am forever thankful to you for your love and support during my youth and formative years.  I will always cherish, and never forget, the wonderful times we had skiing, golfing, swimming, fishing, just talking...there are too many memories to adequately memorialize here.  I can only wish to be half the man that you were and have guided me to be.  Most importantly though, you taught me faith, and to always be loving, honorable, supportive and graceful in my daily life.  Your memory serves me purpose every day to strive to be such a man.  You are a hero to many, and you can eternally count me at the head of that group.  I love you and miss you.

We feel blessed to have met your father!  I certainly enjoyed the time I spent with him especially at Rhythm on the Rails.

Dear Linda, Jill and Families,
Our hearts go out to you as you grieve the loss of your precious "Papa".  
As you are left with the pain of no longer having him here with you, surely there was great rejoicing on the "other side" as he reunited with those who went before.  The one thread that continues to bind you all is the great love you held for one another...that will never be broken.  Still, it is difficult to ease the wound that lies deep within.
Bill was such a genteel man.  He possessed a grand spirit--a spirit that showed great kindness and generosity.  He lived life well, and leaves a beautiful legacy.
Bless you all as you adjust to life without him.

     As you think back on a life well-lived, you can always tell something about a person by the legacy that he leaves. Bill Mason certainly did live a rich and full life, and he leaves us with two of the most loving, unselfish, devoted daughters--Linda and Jill. He also leaves a huge family and many friends who will remember him with smiles and will cherish their years of fabulous memories.  He and his dear wife built the groundwork for their children to live rich, rewarding, superlative lives. Good job, Masons!
     I've loved my times with Bill.  I'll remember our games of War, LRC, dice box, puzzles;  I'll smile when I think of our many dinners in the Whitener patio and in their home, in restaurants (some more successful than others); I'll cherish our Thursday nights at Rhythm on the Rails, neighborhood happy hours, weekend walks in Niwot.
     The void that Bill's death leaves is immense.  But I''m sure he would not want those left behind to continue to grieve but rather to grab each day with gusto--just as he did for his many years.
     Bill, I hope your adventures continue--with a body without flaw and a mind sharp and bright--and that you are now surrounded by those who have been patiently awaiting you.  And don't worry about your dear girls; they will be just fine.

What lovely memories I have of Bill (and Betty) Mason!  He was a charming man with an ever-present smile and an infectious love of life, family & friends, and the outdoors.  It sorrows me to know he is gone from our world, but the lovely thing about memories is the good ones grow more vivid and precious with time.  Linda and Jill (and all of your family members), I know there is an irreplaceable hole in your lives, but hopefully your memories and those of all of us who knew and loved your parents will help keep them alive for you.  I rejoice that I was one of the fortunate people to have enjoyed knowing and spending time with Bill Mason.

The BEST thing about your Dad is that he was your mom's sweetheart and a wonderful father who raised 2 wonderful daughters.  You and Linda did what few people would do. What an amazing man Bill Mason was.  I feel so luck to have known him in his later life. Bill has made a powerful impact on this world, and has taught so many about honor, respect and love.

Looking through this photo gallery brings back so many wonderful memories of Bill and Betty. I am grateful for the years at Mason & Morse, for the gift of knowing Bill, for all that he brought to life. He was so proud of all of the Bills in his life - he dearly loved his family. Thank you for the sustenance of life that you provided to those around you in memories and love. Many blessing to all of you.

To Jill, Bill, Mason and their family, my sympathy for your loss of a good man.

Bill and Betty moved to Aspen in 1953.  The following winter Bill voluteered to teach skiing for the Wednesday afternoon classes in the Aspen Public School and I was so very lucky to be in his class.  After several of those Wednesday afternoon outings, Bill called me aside at the end of the day and asked if I would like to babysit Linda & Jill on Saturday night.  I was a freshman in high school and, of course, said "yes".  Bill went home and told Betty he had found a babysitter.  Betty's reaction, to paraphrase, was No, No, No....no one is going to babysit for us that we do not know and do not know her parents.  I went home and told Mom and Dad - can't you just hear my dad - "Like hell you are.  You are not babysitting for anybody we do not know."  I don't remember how it was resolved.  Maybe I called Bill and told him I couldn't or he called Dad to see if they could get together.  I do remember that I babaysat that Saturday night and many, many more. In the many years that followed when I would happen to see Bill, he would nudge me and say, "They didn't know, but we knew what we were doing."  Bill was such a kind man and one that will remain in my heart forever.  It was an honor to have known him.

As a child growing up, and being a friend of Jills, I spent much time up at the Mason home on Red Mountain and have nothing but smiling memories of "Mr. Mason." A presence I always enjoyed being around and in my childs mind, always recognizing what a terrific father and husband that he was. One of Papa's joys in life was playing golf.  Another was giving Bill Autrey a hard time.  Some years ago I played a round of golf with Papa and Bill.  Papa did not play well that day.  We were talking afterwards, and Papa was lamenting about how poorly he had played.  Then he turned to me and said (in a voice loud enough for Bill to hear) "he (Bill) can't play golf either - he just thinks he can."  I will greatly miss his sense of humor and strength of character. I first met Bill in the mid-1970's when I was a young mortgage lender at Aspen Savings and Loan.  Even though he was a prominent Realtor in those days, and I was just learning the ropes, he always had time to answer my calls and to help get me everything I needed in order to close his deals.  If he didn't have the answer, he'd figure out who did, and then follow up to make sure everything was on track.  Not many of his peers were as easy to work with!  I remember the delight of running into him and Betty far from home at national Savings and Loan conferences, where he acted as a Board member for another institution.  His laugh was so infectious and they both made me feel special!  He treated everyone with the utmost respect and served as a wonderful example for all the Realtors and business people of Aspen and beyond.  We should all strive to emulate him.  I know I will never forget him!

Dear Jill and Linda-The love and care you showed your Dad was one of the nicest things I've ever witnessed. The way you girls took care of him left no doubt as to how much you love him.  He had a great sense of humor which showed so much when Jill and I got in a jam! Also, the way he loved your Mother is so sweet. She is his sweetheart and I know they are together now. So, here's to your Dad-a great guy  that I have fond memories of. Love, Sue

I had the privilege of meeting your parents when I first moved to town in the late '70's and worked at The Bank of Aspen.  I used to house sit for them when they would go out of town.  My biggest mistake when I house sat..was over exercising Killy....which caused him to be sick all over the white carpet...unfortunately I was not able to get the stain out.  Your mother forgave me but told me how to get the stain out in the future and reminded me that Killy was old..no more car rides and exercise!

Your father was a true gentleman and I am glad I had the opportunity to know him. I think of your parents everytime I go up Red Mtn Road and pass Placer Lane.  Your parents will be in my thoughts and prayers.  My best to you and your entire families.

How difficult is is to let go of our loved ones.  No matter what surrounds this earthly existence, it is so painful when they are removed from the outreach of our touch.  I cried for all of you, but I smiled at the assurance that your Dad's human shell had been discarded and the brilliance of his essence was exposed as he stood before his Creator and was re-united with his Soul Mate.  I prayed that God would be close and that in your grief you would feel his presence as He holds all of you in a tight, sustained, big, family hug.

Dear Linda,Jill and all the Bills, Bill and Betty were our very best friends.  We had so many wonderful times together in Arizona.  The one we really treasure is when their 50th aniversary was coming up and we told them we wanted to have a big party for them.  Their treasured answer was "No, we just want to spend it with you guys." Rhoda had a great dinner for us and I will have to find the pictures we took then. They are together again and we can look forward to a big get together with them if we get to heaven some day. Last evening we were at dinner here at Friendship Village and Ann Watson sat next to us.  I told her of Bill's passing and she was also saddened.  She and Jim were friends in Aspin. .I will share the obituary with her and others. Bill was the friendlest person we have ever known.  He really added to our lives just by knowing him for these many years. Dear Jill, Bill and Family,
Please accept our sincere condolences for the loss of Papa in your lives.  He was an amazing man who lived life to the fullest.  We have fond memories of time spent with Papa at Rockies' baseball games, summer concerts, tailgate parties, and of course many "Happy Hours".  We will always remember his beaming face as he crossed the finish line at the Bolder Boulder for his triumphant comeback performance.  But our standout memory is the infamous Italian dinner that he and Bettie hosted with all its unexpected surprises. Papa will always have a special place in our hearts.

My late husband, George Hopper, and I knew Bill and Betty through the Episcopal Church in Aspen.  Although we lived on Lookout Mtn., we spent many weekends in Snowmass and attended Christ Church in Aspen.  Bill was such a kind and friendly person to everyone.  When we were first struggling to learn to ski, Bill took time to point out some helpful hints to make the sport much more fun.  I can imagine how boring it must have been for him to spend time skiing with beginners, but that was Bill Mason.  Always a gentleman!  He will be greatly missed.  Sally Hopper

 As a old Aspen lover I remember Mr. Mason as a great contributor to a wonderful place a man with vision for a town. As a small boy I was a little sweet on Jill me and a friend would walk to the house on Red Mountain to talk to the girls, we worried about Bill but he was nothing but nice to us. He was part of the Aspen charm. He would wave at times as you passed the offices and later when he would see me as a Aspen cop he would smile and ask me if I was keeping the peace. May God pour out his blessings to Jill, Linda and indeed Bills extended family. I will remember Bill Mason all my natural days.

Dear Family of Bill Mason....Bob and I and other friends had many great skiing days with Bill and Betty and I was always amazed that it didn't matter what the snow conditions were Bill could make those pretty pretty turns...We had many years of getting together for a variety of reasons. Hiking, camping, skiing, dinners, etc. and it was always fun with your folks.  One time Jill, Bill. Bob and I drove to a football game in Craig I think...the weather was bad and we had to put chains on...Jill was trying to help and Bill finally said, "Jesus Jill get the wrench"....from then on Bob called her "J J"
