Oma was born on May 23, 1921 in Kniesen, Slovakia to Alexander Korsch and Victoria (Walchuk) Korsch. She passed away on March 2, 2017 at Peach Arch Hospital after a very acute medical event while residing at Whitecliff Retirement Residence with Ernst at her side for 72 years. Her passage was very peaceful while surrounded by the love of her family both present and in spirit.
Alice and Ernie were married in Wolferode, East Germany on August 21, 1945. They had met in Kniesen, Slovakia as Ernst was passing through with the German infantry. Oma was a public school teacher and as the war was coming to an end she made her way to Wolferode by train arriving on December 24, 1944. While Ernie was in officer training near the end of the war in Dresden, East Germany, Oma kept busy teaching public school and helping to manage their farm with Ernst's parents Paul and Minna ( Braune ). They had their son Paul on March 17, 1946.
In September 1951, they made a bold move to leave East Germany, abandoning all their possessions to emigrate to Thunder Bay, Ontario where Oma had family. As you might imagine, surviving all this, Oma's strong spirit, ability to speak five languages, and a powerful will were important assets. She was very tolerant if you did things her way. Oma showed her endearing love to her son Paul, daughter in law Jan
(Smith), four grandchildren, Nicole (Paul Jorgensen), Todd (Lianne Fisman) Julia (Sean Sharpe) and Paul Douglas (Lindsay Delamontaigne) and her six great grandchildren, Sofia, Sadie, and Sloan (Jorgensen), Rivka, and Alice (Lianne and Todd) and Finn Oliver (Lindsay and Paul Douglas). Oma loved them all and would often express this through her delicious cooking and mouth watering tortes.
Her Celebration of Life Service will be on April 8, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre, 14831 28 Avenue, Surrey BC.
