Hi dad, thinking about you so much today!!  I know you would be so proud of me right now. You gave me this extra boost of confidence to go back to school because you alway believed I could do great things. Dad I am on cloud9 right now. I'm killing it in school, I just had a midterm in which I score 94% and had a project which I got 100%. I was so nervous but I did it. My hard work is paying off and I so deeply wish you were here seeing me do it all. I know you are watching over me but a high five from you would be everything xoxo. My girls are growing up so fast oh dad you would just love them. I talk about you all the time to them. Brett is taking after you for sure, we just got her cast off. She's a tough kid I tell you and Addison she's just like me she's trouble.. I guess I kind of deserve that eh heheh. God I love them so much and I'm going to hold them a little tighter tonight. Daddy, I can imagine the last time I saw you. I close my eyes and squeeze hug you a little tighter and a little longer each time. That memory so fresh never fading. Five years feels like a long time but my heart still feels like it was yesterday. Time has healed some of the pain but it's not something I will ever get over, losing you. The boys love you so much. I know you are a guardian angel watching over them. How could you not be. You could not miss watching them grow up. You may not be here physically but we can feel you. Your love was a seed planted in my heart and over the years I have let it blossom, and loved my own children with the same love. It keeps me strong, a true love from a father to a daughter. Until we meet again. I love you forever.

I still have days where I don't understand why you're gone. Why you had to be taken from us so early on. You had so much more life to live.  I still needed you. September 30th is the day that we lost you but today October 1st is the day I lost a piece of my heart. Hearing those words and then realizing that I will never see you smile again. I will never hear you laugh , I will never be able to say I love you. You were taken too soon and I was not ready ! I still wonder the what ifs and the whys all the time.. but that is the way life works it's unfair and cruel. That doesn't mean it's not beautiful and wonderful because it is that too. I have made a wonderful life for myself and I know you would be proud. But here I sit just wishing you were here. 5 long years it's been. I thank you so much for giving me so much in those short years that we had with you and the memories that I will hold so close to my heart forever. It's been five years dad and I miss you so much. Hi uncle Brett....i love you and I will always love you. I miss you too much, I wish that we could of hung out more, but its life. Well… It's been quite some time since I have "written you!"  Couple more days and it will be 4 years since you left us…  Still miss you horribly and I guess that will never change. Hey Brother. Thinking of you today. Fortunately for me I have a few things around the house that make it impossible to forget you. Unfinished projects we started, pictures, the rose that you wore to your daughters wedding that I actually just dusted today. Every time I start thinking of you I want to cry. I'm getting a wisdom tooth pulled tomorrow and I am nervous. I hate the dentist. I was just remembering the time I made you come to the blood bank with me because I had been planning the blood drive for our school grad and it would have been hypocritical of me not to have donated as well. Anyhow, I wanted you to come so that I could be brave for my dad while the blood was drawn and you did. You took the day off and everything just to come hold my hand because I was scared. I wish you could be here to laugh at my fear of the dentist. It's just one tooth you'd probably say and then you'd laugh at my chipmunk face after. Britt did it without you. I suppose I can too. Thinking of you a lot lately. Olivia has purchased her Grad dress. She is going to look absolutely stunning. She is preparing for her graduation, and although she is quite excited she is heartbroken that you will not be there. I know you will be watching and beaming with pride, may she feel your love and presence on her special day. Olivia is growing into a beautiful young woman and is full of hopes and dreams for her future. We are doing our best to guide  and support her into her next phase of her life. Hey daddy :) today I went to a riding clinic, and I thought I did awesome ! I wish you could be here to meet my pony, he's one of the best things that has come into my life since you left. And when I'm with him, I forget things, I'm truely happy, and I wish you were here to see that.. I know that you're there everytime I ride, even if its boring... You're there watching over me. You are my reason I haven't given up. You are a part of my riding, I miss you being at shows and even sleeping in the truck during my lessons. I just miss you so much ! I bet you are one proud dad though ! I mean I have accomplished jumping real high ! And you probably thought it was sweet watching your fearless lil' girl jump a 4ft fence :') I'm pretty proud of myself too, but I couldn't of done it without you ! Knowing you're here in my heart fills me with joy. And this year I'm graduating daddy... I am really nervous, because I don't want to do it without you, but I know I'm gonna have to... It's Christmas Eve and all the magic and wonderment that surrounds it, is about to begin!  I am thinking of you more often these last few weeks, as I see everyone around preparing for this day of celebration! I miss your laugh and playfulness. I never thought I'd meet someone who would refuse to grow up as much as Ernie, but you two truly were two brothers from a different mother. Missing you terribly...

I had the honor of speaking at Brett’s funeral, for those of you who do not know me I was Brett’s Brother in law. I would not tell friends that Brett was my in-law, I would tell people he was my brother. I wanted to post my words which I spoke that day:

“ Robbed, Cheated, Crushed….that’s how I feel. We have been robbed of a father, brother, son and friend. Other than the extreme maturity, incredible amount of responsibility towards the care of, and love for his three daughters, Brett was the oldest kid I have ever known. Brett loved to tease me, poke fun of me and the last time he pretended to kiss me, having it made me feel so un comfortable, today I am cheated, and robbed of that kiss which I now I wish I could have.

A few things I knew about Brett:
1)Never to dare Brett, cause he would take that dare.
2)If we were near any water, like a pool, lake or creek. I would take my wallet out of my pants because most likely I would end up wet.
3)To stand up for yourself and love ones NO MATTER WHAT!
4)When he would show up to my house without  proper clothing, I would expect to lose a sweaty, shirt or what have ya when michelle would force him to wear that something home.
5)When dinner was ready to be served, that I better get in on it quickly if I wanted to get some.
6)When doing a speech, it’s ok and an honor to see Brett cry. (Brett you cried at my wedding , when you welcomed me to your family the day I married your sister, that made me feel special)

As I said earlier, we have been robbed, and cheated. But Brett nothing can take that memory of you and I telling each other that we loved one another. For that I have some peace within me. 

Brett last year’s Christmas dinner, when I told you to grow up, act your age and you still pegged me in the head with that ball, causing me to almost cry as if we were 10 year olds at the playground. Looking back, that was funny, in fact it was hilarious and I will miss those moments for the rest of my life. (I wish I could have seen that it was funny at the time, I’m sorry)

In closing, Brett you have reminded me that a good life is not defined by income or money. A good life is defined by how much love you gave, and how many hearts you filled. I will always feel that me and our family have been cheated and robbed, but more importantly how blessed and honored I am for the memories and time we had together. I will never forget you..ever.  Your brother from another mother, Cade.”

I’m having a hard day today missing you my friend, and was nervous to post this, for what you have taught me today is that life is short, and I have to do everything in my power to enjoy the things I have and to be happy. I know in my heart that today you are happy, you’re at peace. You have met my mom, my grandparents “Baba” and “Didi”. Tell them I love them cause I know they were waiting for you anxiously to tell you who they are……untill we meet again.

Webster defines grief as intense sorrow caused by loss of a loved one.
I cannot define it.  I just know it's a feeling of emptiness in your heart, a void that aches where a piece is missing, because your heart is truly broken and you realize your life has been forever changed.
But when I think of Brett, my heart fills with joy and happiness and I can only smile.
I don't remember the first day I met Brett, but I know he fit comfortably into my life like an expensive pair of shoes or a well worn pair of gloves.
Brett was always smiling, laughing or poking fun at me.  he would laugh at his own jokes, or how witty he was, proud that he had gotten one over on me, but slow to admit when I managed to get him back.
I remember while training for a marathon and heading out on a 20 kilometer run, Brett laughed because I was talking about how difficult it was.  I challenged him to join me, and to my surprise, he did!  Running by my side in an old pair of runners, completely unprepared to handle the Osoyoos heat.  I felt awful the next day when his legs were so sore, he was hardly able to crawl out of his tent.  But he didn't make me feel bad -- he laughed -- both at himself and at me for feeling bad.
Brett was unique, his hair ranged from long to bald, orangeish yellow to black, his clothes were blue jeans and ridiculous t-shirts to outlandish multi-colored shirts that made you wonder where he had found them.  But despite his poor fashion choices he was charismatic and attractive to everyone that knew him.
Brett was a son, brother, grandfather, uncle, friend and a mother & father to 3 beautiful girls that he cherished deeply.  Three girls, their girlfriends and one man - Brett, on the road camping in Osoyoos, that was the type of dare-devil he was!
Only Brett would show my boys how to ride their bikes with no hands, jump off the bridge in Osoyoos and tell them to leap from the top of Bromley Rock, the smiles on their faces told me that Brett was much more than an Uncle to them, he was their friend, a confidant, and someone they just felt comfortable with.
Although Brett was taken from us far too soon, he will always be with us as happy memories , memories that make you smile, memories that make you laugh, and memories that let you know how much he cared about you.
Think of Brett and put a smile on your face, a smile, that can fill that empty spot in your heart.

Brett you where the oldest kid i ever met you weren't just my aunts brother you were a friend. I will never forget you, thanks for being the one who got me to jump off the bridge in osoyoos for the first time. Miss you <3 forever there will be a spot in my heart for you.

You made me laugh and i have lot's of memories of you.I will forevery miss you.See you again one day.You made me smile.I love you.I wish you were here.You are awesome in my heart.You use to play with me.I am very lucky,because i got the last chance to see you at my birthday.I know everyone misses you.Love your only Niece,Miah-jean Cade.I LOVE YOU IN MY BEAUTIFUL HEART.!

Brett. I don't have the words to express what an awesome man you were. I know that your girls and your family and friends loved you very much.Your family will continue to grow and you will continue to live on through them. You always had that look on your face like you were up to something . You made me laugh ! I have lots of fond memories of you as you grew from a boy to a father.You will be deeply and sadly missed . See you again one day.

Where does a sister begin.  The joys, the love, the laughter, the tears, all we experienced, all we shared.  You have always been close to my heart and so you will forever remain.  I find it extremely difficult to bid a farewell, as if I have a choice, and yet I am comforted in knowing with all my heart that you are where you belong, where you need to be, at complete rest.  No more weariness, body or otherwise, but that you are at peace, at peace with yourself.  A peace, a love like no other, you so richly deserved, a peace that I wish had been afforded to you during your short stay here with us.  I feel you looking down upon me with no regrets, but with satisfaction and admiration for all "you" have instilled in each and everyone you have touched.  I cannot fathom what the rest of my life will be like without you my little brother, as this tragic event will and has forever defined my life, defined me as a person.  I could go on feeling robbed and cheated and feed my pain, but that would serve no one, including you and mostly myself.  There is still so much more life beholds for me, so I will hold my head up, a little slower at first, but I promise to pick up the pace as I go along, and enjoy the many gifts you have laid before me and await the rest that are yet to come.  So a farewell I will bid you, and forget you I will never, and love you I will always.   xox

Writing for everyone at Fairmile and Stonecroft who knew Brett over the years, we were shocked and saddened by his passing. Although we only worked together, we develop strong bonds in our business and look forward to seeing the familiar faces. The best people in our business know that when the work is done the important time begins as we all head home to our families. He was one of the best. We know and remember his devotion to his family and his pride in his children. We miss Brett and will remember him well.

Brett always brought  fun and laughter into other peoples lives. I will miss his joyous laugh and constant teasing. I am so thankful he spent a lot of weekends at our house with Jess, Britt and Olivia. I will always remember the late nights, no holds bar ball tag through out the house and the big breakfasts of waffles, whipped cream and strawberries. The pocket bikes and  go - Kart racing up and down our driveway.  I remember how excited you were when you surprised Kelly, by showing up  at our place with a pool table just like the one  you two used to play on when you were kids. I admire you for the relationship you shared with your girls. I think you showed us all how to  love with our actions and to remember to have fun in the process. But above all this, you were a man of rich character and integrity.  I will miss you till we meet again.

As many people would know my daddy was my world. I depended on him on so many things, he was there for me during, hard times, heart breaks, my complaints, school, sports, you name it. I could always depend on him. He loved and supported me through so much. It’s hard to process me saying good-bye today. His unconditional love made me the person I am today and couldn’t have ever asked for a better dad. He never doubted me or let me down. He put us first no matter what and I thank him for that. No one will ever be able to replace him or his place in my heart. I love you so much daddy. A day won’t go by where I won’t think of you or miss you. Rest in peace, and I’ll see you again one day.
