Much loved husband, father, grandpa, uncle, friend, engineering technologist, athlete, sportsman, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers fan, Bryan passed away on November 21 at Langley Memorial Hospital of heart failure following a lengthy illness.
He was born on June 12, 1946 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Arthur and Irene Robertson. His father, a war veteran and RCAF pilot, was tragically killed in the line of duty in an airplane crash in Canada shortly after the Second World War. Surrounded by extended family, Irene raised Bryan in Winnipeg where he attended Kelvin High School and obtained postsecondary training at the Manitoba Institute of Technology. At age 15 while vacationing at Falcon Lake, MB, he met his best friend and future wife, Shirley Rutherford of Brandon, MB. With or without his mother’s knowledge, his high school years were punctuated by trips to Brandon and the Lake, as well as points in between, to see Shirley. They were married in 1968 in Brandon, and raised two children in Winnipeg, Sean and Shelley.
Bryan was a lover of sports and the outdoors. He was a linebacker for his high school; a stockcar racer; guided his English springer spaniel, Marshfield’s Honey, to become a Canadian Kennel Club field trial champion; a minor league hockey coach; and, a founding member of the Oji-Sans (old timers) hockey team in Richmond, BC (where he moved the family in 1978). He was fortunate to have spent time with Shirley, family, and friends at their cabin on Pender Island for many years, and to have made good friends during twice-annual salmon fishing trips to the coast of BC. On their own and often with friends, family, and his guitar, he and Shirley enjoyed camping and other vacations across Canada and beyond. His grandson, Travis Evans played with Langley Minor Football and Bryan reported on the games for the Langley Times. Bryan was a supporter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. He was also a member of Healthy Heart groups in Richmond and Langley and–last but not least–the BC Corvette Club.
Bryan’s interest in cars and mechanical aptitude led him to a successful 35-year career at General Motors of Canada, as well as post-retirement consultancy work at Lansdowne Pontiac-Buick-GMC. Upon fully retiring, he and Shirley moved to Langley.
Bryan is pre-deceased by his mother, Irene. He is survived and dearly missed by his wife, Shirley; son, Sean (Jos Arpink); daughter, Shelley (Adrian) Evans; and, grandchildren, Travis and Savannah Evans.
A sincere thank you to Dr. David Richardson and the wonderful staff at Langley Memorial Hospital.
A celebration of life will be held at Murrayville Hall (21667 48th Avenue, Langley) on Friday, December 5, 2025 at 12pm - 2pm.
