She was born on Oct. 14 1924 on a farm in the Qu'Appelle Valley Sask., to parents Ellen and James Mattick and is predeceased by loving brothers Arthur, Len and Alex. Also, she is predeceased by her husband of 48 yrs., Arthur E. Straub and is survived by her sister and friend Lorna Mearns of Saskatoon Sask.
Eleanor's love for the great outdoors began with life on the farm and much preferred doing outside chores, even mucking out the barn, to being stuck inside. Over the years she developed a cany 'green thumb' and thoroughly enjoyed everything to do with gardening and getting her hands dirty and thru her whole life her natural sense of style and good taste shone, even down to the colors and types of flowers and shrubbery that she chose.
She was a huge sports fan and began as a young woman attending and cheering on the local baseball games and led her to meet her future husband who was himself a 'south paw' pitcher for the Moose Jaw Red Sox. Along with baseball, she was a dedicated lifelong Saskatchewan 'Roughies' fan and tried her best to never miss a game. Eleanor's interest in golf saw her take up the sport, and together with Art, became lifetime members of the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club. Her real enjoyment of hockey started with the Edmonton Oilers, but after retiring out to the west coast with Art in the early 80's, rooted for the Vancouver Canucks for the next 25yrs.
The famous Candy Cane Lane was where her and her family took up residence in Saskatoon in 1962 and a closer group of neighbors and friends was not to be had. From organized block parties in the summer months to a postcard perfect fantasy land of lights in the winter, it was a wonderful and memorable time in their lives and Eleanor was always involved with helping to organize the many activities that developed over the years.
Even as involved as she was with her interests in sports, gardening, reading, decorating and arts & crafts, her love and attention to family and friends came first and was always there to help and lend a hand.
It is a thankful blessing that Eleanor is no longer suffering but will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered and leaves behind her daughters Judy Dyck - Borden Sk., Pat Steele - Lacombe Al., Laurie Iida - Surrey BC., her grand-daughters Carol Tebay and Liz Torrens, 5 greatgrandkids and numerous nieces and nephews of 3 generations.
Many thanks to all the staff members in the Elmden unit at Morgan Place for their excellent and attentive care and doing all they could for her during her final months. Also, a very special thank you to Eva and Bill for their unending compassion, support and understanding and giving more than was called for.
With respecting Eleanor's decision, there will be no funeral service and in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the BC Cancer Society or a cancer agency of your choice.
Inurnment was held on Friday August the 24th at 3 o'clock at Victory Memorial Park Cemetery in South Surrey, BC.
Gone but not forgotten - you are both forever in our hearts.
