July 16, 1943 – May 11, 2025
With deep love and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gary Gartry, one of the kindest and gentlest souls. He died peacefully on May 11, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife and children. Over the past year Gary faced serious health challenges with courage, giving everything he had to remain with those he loved.
Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to Margaret and Orm Gartry, Gary grew up in West Vancouver. After spending a few fun-filled years as a ladies’ man (or at least giving it his best shot) with his best friend Denny, he met and married the love of his life, Ginger, on June 24, 1966. Together, they built a warm and loving life, first in North Vancouver, where they raised their two children, and eventually settling in Langley, BC.
Gary was the proud and loving father of Candice (Andrew) and Rob (Eugenia), and a cherished grandfather to Zoe, Guada, and Lola, who knew him lovingly as Opa or Abuelo. He also held deep affection for his step-grandchildren - Carmen, Sierra, and Mateo - who brought even more joy and love into his life. He was a beloved brother-in-law, sharing a particularly close bond with Shelby (Garry) and Shelley (Bill), and was a loyal friend to many.
Gary enjoyed a successful career as a respected real estate agent, earning numerous awards and accolades. He held fond memories of his time curling at Capilano Winter Club with Mike and Carolyn, sharing his favorite scotch and solving the world’s problems with Jack and Christine, and evenings on the patio with Ron and Laurie, savouring even more scotch and seeing who could be more obnoxious.
He took great pleasure in life’s quieter moments—reading, going for drives, spending time with his beloved dogs (Shelby), watching curling and golf, and cheering on the Canucks from his favourite chair.
Gary was known for his calm presence, kind heart, and dry sense of humour. He loved to make people laugh with his quick comebacks and spontaneous silly gestures that seemed to come out of nowhere. He was always there—for advice, a ride, or a thoughtful chat, and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. His absence leaves a space in our hearts that can never be filled.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at First Memorial Funeral Services Fraser Heights Chapel, 14835 Fraser Highway, Surrey, BC. (please note that there is ongoing heavy construction on Fraser Highway).
In lieu of flowers, donations in Gary’s memory may be made to the BC SPCA, a cause close to his heart.
