We mourn the loss but celebrate the life of Irene Denise Poirier nee Cyr. Irene was born in Ottawa at the Grace Hospital in June 1940. She was the oldest child of Lea-Anne (nee Brazeau) and George Cyr, she was pre deceased by her brother Gilles and survived by her brother Charles.
It was apparent from very early on that Irene would be a person of exemplary compassion and grace. Several years after the death of her father she nursed her brother Gilles through a long battle against leukemia. One week after the death of her dear brother she was married and had to leave her mother to move to Germany with her new groom and dear husband Claude Edmond Poirier who survives his soul mate Irene.
Irene was never one to sit so she set their new lives on a busy path filled with friends, entertaining, curling, bowling, square dancing and soon children. Irene and Claude were blessed with three children, Steven, Nancy and Sandra. Irene's children will hold all the lessons of kindness, love, independence and respect that they learned from their mother in their minds and hearts forever.
At various times throughout Irene's life she volunteered with CWL, at nursing homes and most recently with P.E.O. (Philanthropic Education Organization). P.E.O provides loan, grants and bursaries to post high school women who require assistance in order to return to school. She always felt that it was important for a woman to be able to be independent so this work was very dear to her heart.
Her 7 grandchildren - Alex Poirier, Andrew Poirier, Jordan Campbell, Sarah Campbell, Elias Antelman, Matthew Poirier and Alexis Antelman will always treasure the memory of Grandma's chocolate chip cookies and her Mac and cheese. Grandma loved and cherished all of her grandchildren and supported them at whatever stage of life or situation they were in.
We take solace knowing that Irene is once again with her parents and brother who she loved so much and she will live in our hearts until we see her again.
