Maliawan Adam was a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He passed away peacefully on February 20 at age 91 years old.
Maliawan was born on August 3, 1933 in Cirebon, West Java, Indonesia to Liem Toen Houw and Tan Kiok Nio. He was one of 3 sons in a family of 6 children.
After graduating high school, Maliawan went to study in College of Civil Engineering, in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia; After graduation, he worked in Jakarta. His first project was Cloverleaf Bridge for the 1st ASEAN Games. He recalled one of the highlights of his work was to meet President Soekarno (the first President of Indonesia) during the president’s visit to the site.
In 1959, Maliawan met the love of his life, Hetty in Jakarta and were married 3 years later. Together they have three sons: Ferdinand, Edward, and Frank.
Following the family move to Vancouver, Canada in 1975, having no previous professional baking experience, they bravely bought a bakery in the trendy Kitsilano area of Vancouver until it was sold in 1993.
Moving to Canada was a challenging and emotional experience for Wan, but when he looked back on his journey, God had given him and family a life full of gratefulness and blessings with good friends, close relationships among sons, daughters in-law, and grandchildren.
Wan and Hetty were God’s gift to each other. They shared countless memorable moments together but always fondly recalled their camping trip to Queen Charlotte Islands, cruises to Alaska, Panama Canal, Mediterranean, and Tahiti, and their 50th wedding anniversary in Oahu, Hawaii with the whole family.
Wan and Hetty were always ready to open their home in service to others. Their house would always be filled with visiting family and friends from close by and abroad. They well represented Jesus with their love, generosity, and sacrifice.
In this side of eternity, God had directed Wan’s path to be a great testimony across generations that He placed around him.
Maliawan is survived by their three children Ferdinand, Edward and Frank along with their spouses Vilma, and Judy and grandchildren Amanda, Emily, Nathan, and Liam.
We will miss him greatly.
