Shirley Ellen MacNutt (nee Trewin) passed away on January 19, 2022, in hospital after a lengthy illness. She is predeceased by her parents and husband Bob. Shirley is survived by her children Lisa (Rob) and Michael, sisters Beth and Margo, mother-in-law Irene, brother-in-law Jack and many many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by many friends and her church community.
Shirley was born in Ottawa on June 12, 1951 the youngest of three girls. She enjoyed working at Carlton University before her big move out west. She moved to BC in 1972, settling in South Delta after marrying Bob in 1973. Bob was a pilot for CP Air, Canadian Airlines and then Air Canada before his retirement.
They welcomed Lisa into their family in 1976 and Michael a few years later in 1979.
Shirley dedicated most of her life taking care of her family; she worked part time in administrative positions in education settings and volunteering in her community.
Volunteering was a source of great pride for Shirley. She volunteered in Ladner at the quilt store, the Hospital Auxiliary thrift store, the annual Quilt Walk and Car Show as well as within her church community at both Tsawwassen and Ladner United Churches. There she would make sandwiches and help with the craft group and rummage sales.
Shirley loved to garden when she was able. She particularly loved daisies and wildflowers as well as watching the horses and wildlife in the field behind her home in Ladner. The view from her kitchen and deck brought her many moments of happiness over the years.
Genealogy was a hobby of Shirley’s, and she was very proud of her British heritage. She also loved everything crafting – sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, and cross stitch were some of her favourite pastimes. She always remembered birthdays, and often sent home made gifts to her family and friends.
Though the last few years of Shirley’s life were difficult as her health deteriorated, she continued to spend energy on the wellbeing of her family, taking care of them as best she could.
Shirley is now at peace and is no longer suffering. All those who knew and loved her will take a piece of her with them as they go on, and she will always live in the memories and stories shared by friends and family.
