It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of William David (“Bill”) Eckford. Bill was a talented educator, community volunteer, naval officer, husband, and father.
Born and raised in Kimberley, British Columbia, Bill enrolled in the Royal Canadian Navy and received a university education under the Regular Officer Training Plan, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 1967. He served as an engineering officer on HMCS St. Laurent, reaching the rank of Lieutenant before resigning to pursue further education. He received a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Nova Scotia Technical College before returning to Edmonton to accept a position at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, where he taught for over 40 years. Bill also served as a deacon and volunteer with churches in the Edmonton area.
Bill leaves Ruth, his loving wife of 54 years; daughter Clarice (Kris); son Andrew (Elizabeth) and grandson William; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Leonard and Marie Bertha, and sister Ruth (Jim).
A private memorial service will be held. Donations to the BC Cancer Foundation, bccancerfoundation.com in Bill’s memory, would be greatly appreciated by the family, in lieu of flowers.
