

Alzira M. “Ziggy” (Medeiros) DeMattos, age 91, of Swansea, passed away Monday, December 12, 2016 in Country Gardens Skilled and Rehabilitative Nursing Center. She was the wife of the late Gilbert F. DeMattos.
Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Antone and Joana (Amaral) Medeiros, she was a lifelong resident of Swansea.
A graduate of Joseph Case High School, class of 1944, she worked as a Payroll Clerk for the Swansea School System for over 40 years and volunteered on their Scholarship Committee. She also volunteered at St. Anne’s Hospital and Country Gardens.
Mrs. DeMattos was an active communicant of St. Dominic’s Church where she was member of their Women’s Guild and the St. Vincent de Paul and Holy Spirit Societies. She was a member of the Swansea Portuguese American Civic League for over 30 years, a member and past master of the Swansea Grange and a member of the Warren Couple’s Club. She also enjoyed bowling at Dudek’s in Warren.
She is survived by two sisters; Joana Gracia and Hilda Medeiros both of Swansea, many nieces and nephews including David Gracia and his fiancée Cynthia Fox of Riverside, RI, Stephen Gracia of Fall River, many great-nieces and nephews including Nicole Gracia and many great-great nieces and nephews including Maddison Cabral. She was the sister of the late Joseph Medeiros.
Her Funeral will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at 9:30AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Birchcrest, 189 Gardner’s Neck Rd., Swansea, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00AM in St. Dominic’s Church, 1277 G.A.R. Highway, Swansea. Visiting hours prior to her Mass from 9:30 to 10:30AM. Contributions in her honor may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to A.R.C. of Greater Fall River, 182 North Main St., Fall River, MA 02720. Burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, Swansea.
