George T. Greenhalgh

George T. Greenhalgh, age 88, of Warren, passed away peacefully June 14, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Norma (Betz) Greenhalgh for the past 67 years. Born in Pawtucket, RI, a son of the late Charles G. and Helen (Towle) Greenhalgh, he lived in Pawtucket for many years and summered in Touisset Point in Warren which became his permanent residence in 1974. Touisset was his favorite place on earth. A graduate of the Wilbraham Academy, he was a Veteran of the United States Air Force. He served as an Engine Mechanic based in Panama. Mr. Greenhalgh worked at Greenhalgh Mills in Pawtucket, RI a family business, for many years and retired as Assistant Treasurer in 1976. Mr. Greenhalgh was a proud member of the Republican Party and was involved in many civic activities. He was Past President of the Pawtucket Kiwanis Club, and the Pawtucket Boys and Girls Club. He has been a member of the Touisset Point Community Club since 1955 and served a term as president. He was also a member of the TK Club in Pawtucket and the Anawan Club in Rehoboth. He was an active member of the Pawtucket Congregational Church and later, the First Christian Congregational Church in Swansea. George and Norma traveled extensively in their RV and took many Caribbean cruises together. They also enjoyed bowling and square dancing as members of the Humdingers Club. In his younger days, he loved racing Town Class sailboats “Townies” in the Mount Hope Bay. Later, he enjoyed building and racing radio controlled model sailboats and served as Commodore of the Narragansett Model Yacht Association. Artistically talented, he was a prolific wood carver and craftsman. Seagulls and ducks were among his favorite subjects. He was also known to have made the best stuffed quahogs and chowder on Touisset Point. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter: Susan Greenhalgh Viveiros and her husband Peter of Tiverton, his son: David G. Greenhalgh and his wife Susan of Barrington, a son-in-law: Stanley Larkin Jr. of NJ, a brother: Charles Gordon Greenhalgh Jr., of Seekonk, MA, three grandchildren: Todd Larkin and his wife Ann Marie of NJ, Michelle Greenhalgh and her husband Michael Heinsdorf, Ian Greenhalgh all of Washington, D.C., and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Nancy Greenhalgh Larkin and brother of the late Gail Trautmann, Thomas B. Greenhalgh, and Ann Sachs. Burial will be private. A Memorial Service for George will be held on July 11, 2015 at 11:00AM in the First Christian Congregational Church 1113 G.A.R. Highway. Swansea, MA 02777. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor may be made to the First Christian Congregational Church.
