Born in Boston to the late Ralph E. and Effie (Rashed) Risk, she spent her youth in Boston, Swansea, and Fall River. Swansea has been her home for the past 55 years, where she shared over 40 years of marriage with her husband, the late Louis D. Flynn, Sr.
A graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, Class of 1959, Jeannie was a member of the glee club. Though not a musician, she loved music and was a lifelong fan of Elvis Presley and Barbra Streisand. She would often call her family members on their birthdays, sing “Happy Birthday,” and then exclaim, “Just like Barbra!” — a cherished memory her loved ones will always treasure.
Jeannie worked at Korber Hats Inc. for many years before retiring in 2003. After retiring, she continued working at Waring-Sullivan Funeral Homes, Almeida’s Fruit Stand, and Sam’s Bakery.
An active retirement suited Jeannie well; she would spend her days striking up conversations with patrons, always eager to provide warmth and comfort to those she encountered. She enjoyed taking rides to the beach in her dream car, a Volkswagen Beetle convertible, and encouraged folks to stare at the lady with patches of purple hair and fake gauge spike earrings. She was fortunate to find love and companionship during this time, sharing five meaningful years with Eddy Motta.
Jeannie was also involved in numerous organizations and committees over the years, including the Jayceettes, where she served as secretary, treasurer, and president; the Hatter’s Union, where she was secretary, treasurer, and shop steward; and the West Point Parents Organization. In addition, Jeannie volunteered with the local Little League, Beacon Hospice, and the New England Christian Academy. She also served as a chaperone for the Fall River Junior Miss.
Though not an avid cook, Jeannie’s Lebanese food was unmatched, as was her cribbage game and her ability to make those close to her laugh until they could hardly catch their breath.
Jeannie’s family was her greatest pride and joy; she made every effort to attend every school concert, play, softball game, football game, graduation, and wedding she could, she was even their flower girl.
She is survived by her two sisters: Charlotte R. Field and her husband Lawrence of Virginia Beach, VA, and Donna Martel and her husband Christopher of Johnston, RI.
She also leaves behind her two children: L. Donald “Donnie” Flynn, Jr. and his wife Janice of Hampton, NH, and Kelly J. Coury and her husband Steven of Swansea; six grandchildren: L. Donald “Don” Flynn, III (Javier), Brian Flynn (Jennifer), Joseph Flynn, Katie Flynn Gallegos (Eleuterio), Kaycee Lowengrub, and Kristopher Lowengrub (Rachael); three great-grandchildren: Isabella Gallegos, Juliana Gallegos, and Liliana Flynn; as well as several nieces and nephews. Jeannie eagerly awaited the arrival of her fourth great-grandchild.
A Forty Day Memorial Mass will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at 10:00 AM at St. Anthony of the Desert Maronite Catholic Church, 300 N Eastern Ave., Fall River.
Those wishing to pay tribute to Jeannie are encouraged to do any or all of the following: take a friend to lunch and relish the conversation, let people stare, dye their hair (preferably purple), drive to the beach, stay up late to watch a meteor shower, take a walk in the rain, or shout, “Hiya world, I’m still here!” Whatever you choose, we know she will see it and smile.
We love you, Jeannie.
