Robert L. Horne, “Bob,” 70, of Swansea, passed away September 24, 2025, at HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. He was the husband of Martha (Coogan) Horne, to whom he had been married for the past 44 years.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, a son of the late Francis and Rita (Prendergast) Horne, he lived in Cumberland, Rhode Island before moving to Swansea over fifty years ago.
A graduate of Joseph Case High School, he was president of the class of 1972, attended Rhode Island College, Johnson and Wales and the School of Banking at Williams College.
After 25 years of dedicated service, Bob retired in 2019 as Executive Director of United Way of Greater Fall River. Prior to his tenure at United Way, he worked in the banking industry for 21 years, beginning as a teller and later serving as a loan officer at the former Fleet National Bank, now Bank of America.
A devoted communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Bob was awarded the Marian Medal in 2009 by Bishop Coleman. A committed volunteer throughout his life, he served on the Board of Directors of the Charlton Memorial Foundation, Mechanics Bank, the YMCA, Swansea Little League and United Way, where he was also a past treasurer. When not volunteering for the The Greater Fall River Community Food Pantry, serving as a trustee of the Case High School Scholarship Fund or as past president of Hospice Outreach, he could be found mentoring at-risk youth or even demonstrating his juggling skills at the Boys and Girls Club of Fall River.
Bob was an avid sports and music fan who loved attending his children’s soccer games and stage performances...never without his camera. He enjoyed birdwatching, coin collecting, exploring Rome, Paris and Alaska with Martha, and loved being “Papa Bob” to his two grandsons, whom he adored.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Brendan Horne of Swansea; daughter, Erin Furtado and her husband, Matthew of Kingston, RI and their children, Owen and Gavin; three sisters: Susan Mancinho and her husband John of N. Providence, Donna Durand and her husband Dennis of Swansea, and Nancy Horne of Bristol; one brother, Daniel Ault of Fredericksburg, TX and many nieces and nephews. His best friend of 66 years, Michael McDonald, was like a brother, providing him with never-ending love and support.
Arrangements are in the care of Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Rd., Swansea. Per Bob’s request, all services will be private. Contributions in his honor may be made to HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904 or to United Way of Greater Fall River, PO Box 2550, Fall River, MA 02722.
