Dr. Anni Law passed away in the Buchanan Memorial Hospital at Neil's Harbour on Wednesday March 25. She was born in China of Finnish Missionary parents in 1938 and moved to Canada during WWII. She grew up in Sudbury Ontario and went to Toronto University to do her MD, graduating in 1963.
Anni joined the Grenfell Mission in Northern NF in 1964, where she worked for 7 years. She married her dentist husband Dr. Chris Law in 1968, and in 1971 they moved to Halifax to pursue specialization. This was not to be as they were called back to the Labrador in 1972 to run Harrington Hospital on the Lower north shore of Quebec. From there they were moved to Blanc Sablon, and Anni spent many years off and on working in this remote region. Between 1977 and 1985 they sailed the north Atlantic four times in their 31ft Golden Hind; sailed to the South Pacific, visiting Pitcairn Island and Tahiti before heading for Vancouver Island to build their dream sail boat GROAIS II. This they sailed from BC to NS in 1985 and settled in Cape Breton. From there they made many voyages to Labrador and also a trip to the Açores and back whilst building the Wilderness Village which is SkiTuonela.
Anni will be missed by all her friends and colleagues as well as by many of her patients. Her remains will be by cremation at her wish, with a celebration of life at a later date. Heartfelt thanks to the staff & Drs of the Buchanan Memorial Hospital who made her passing as comfortable as is possible. Arrangements under the direction of Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home.
