It is with heartfelt sorrow that we, the family of Melvin Alexander Jardine of Hillside Boularderie, announce his unexpected but peaceful passing at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on April 14, 2025.
Melvin was born in Florence on October 12th,1942 and was the son of the late Wallace and Mabel Jardine. The eldest son of five children, he chose to remain close to his family members and built his home on the family property in Hillside Boularderie. He happily lived out his life in the beautiful community he so loved.
Melvin was a graduate of the Cape Breton Business College Class of 1967. He then trained and graduated from the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax as a Registered Respiratory Technologist in 1970. After graduating Melvin began his career at St. Rita’s Hospital, later moving to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital when it opened in 1995. He worked there until his retirement in 1997. Melvin loved his work helping others, and he had a long and fulfilling career in health care. Melvin was a genuine people person. He thoroughly enjoyed social gatherings. He had a personality that could light up any room. Known for his kind heart, quick wit, and great story-telling abilities, he made friends wherever he went. He
loved his Wednesday morning coffee breaks at St. James-Knox Presbyterian Church in Big Bras d’Or, where he gathered with friends, neighbors and visitors for a weekly get-together. He was a wonderful storyteller and could recount many past events as well as the people who shaped them. Melvin loved a visit from anyone. His door was always open and the teapot was always on. He enjoyed baking and was known for his delicious pies and tea biscuits. His home was the chosen destination for his sister and her family when they travelled from Newfoundland for visits during the summer months. Melvin greatly enjoyed travelling and visited many different places over the years.
Left to honor his life are his sister Mabel Jardine MacNeil, his brother Grant (Kaye) Jardine, sister-in-law Doreen Jardine and nephews Jeffery and Roderick, with whom he was exceptionally close. Melvin also leaves behind many much loved nieces and nephews from Cape Breton and Newfoundland whose lives he always took an interest in. He will also be missed by his furry companion Turbo. Besides his parents, Melvin was predeceased by his sister Sheila Mulrooney (Placentia Bay, Newfoundland), his brother Wayne (Boularderie Center), his brother Murdoch Alexander in infancy, brothers-in-law Paul MacNeil and Thomas Mulrooney and nephew Dennis Mulrooney.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the Southside Boularderie Fire Department First Responders, the paramedics who answered the call and the nurses, doctors, and staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Emergency and Intensive Care Units. A special thank you is extended to Louise Gillis for her unwavering dedication and care.
Melvin was a member of St. John’s United Church, Big Bras d’Or. Visitation will be held on May 1 from 2-4 and 7-9pm in Fillmore and Whitman funeral home. Funeral service will be held on May 2 at 2pm in St. John's United Church Big Bras d'Or. Memories and condolences can be shared with the family by visiting fillmoreandwhitman.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Lung Association of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, at www.lungnspei.ca or a charity of your choice.
