

It is with deep regret that we, the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame, announce the passing of Sr. Catherine MacDonald on June 30, 2021 at the CND Health Care Center in Sydney.
Sr. Catherine was born May 2, 1921, in Inverness and was the daughter of the late Neil and Catherine Ann (MacNeil) MacDonald. She recently marked her 100th birthday with joy and gratitude.
Sr. Catherine entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1942 and was professed in 1944. She began her teaching career in Montreal. She then taught in various communities including Sydney, Sydney Mines, Iona, Port Hood, Judique, Inverness and Antigonish. Sr. Catherine was known as an excellent teacher and was loved by her students. After her teaching career, for many years she was the coordinator of catechetics at Holy Redeemer Parish in the Pier. Sr. Catherine accepted various responsibilities as a CND, including house bursar in her local community. Her last CND mission was at St. Theresa Convent in Sydney where she lived for about twenty years, and was a faithful member of St. Theresa’s CWL.
When St. Thersa Convent closed in 2011, she moved to Parkland Cape Breton where she resided until 6 months ago. With declining health, she was welcome at the CND Health Center, Sydney, where she often expressed gratitude for the loving care she received.
Sr. Catherine is survived by her sister Christine McGillivray, along with numerous loving nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by sisters Irene (D.J.) Fraser, Anna Mae (Charles) McCarthy and brothers Neil (Betty), John (Marie), Angus (Kay) and brother-in-law Leonard MacGillivray.
Until the time of her passing Catherine remained closely connected to her family and friends.
Sr. Catherine was a devoted member of the CND. Her love of God was revealed in her genuine and sensitive caring of others and in her generous gift of self.
Visitation for Sr. Catherine will be held Monday, July 5 from 5-7pm at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney., Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 am Tuesday July 6 at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery to follow. The mass will be live streamed for those who wish to join virtually.
