Let me tell you about my grandmother……

Cecilia Moore was born to parents Josephine and John Neil MacDonald.  She was the second oldest in a family of six, having only one sister and four brothers.  She favored her father in looks and temperament and was a family oriented person right from the start.
At a very young age, she met and married my grandfather, Michael Moore, and in their late teens, they began a family.  That family grew quickly and for their whole life, they had all their children living close, within the Sydney area.
It’s hard to describe my grandmother so that everyone could appreciate her.  She had a strong will and she defined the word matriarch.  She was our family leader and organizer.  She was the glue that held us all together.  Our grandmother created a culture that became our way of life. She was known as Nana Moore to all; including neighbors and friends. Together with Mick, they created a home that became a place that everyone visited daily.  
Early memories take me back to a kitchen full of people in the house in Whitney Pier and Nan at the centre of it.  She had an electric frying pan going, a teapot full on the stove and a big wringer washer in the middle of the floor doing laundry.  Daily, she had grandchildren coming for dinner as well as most of her own kids.  Lunchtime at Nan’s started at eleven thirty and stretched until about two each day!  There was always fresh hot bread from the bakery and lots of food. I don’t remember a time when the house was empty…. is it any wonder that I cried when it was time to go home!  This became a trend with the grandkids for years to come. Who would have guessed we would be lucky enough that both our grandparents would continue this right into the next generation of great-grandkids. Even as they grew older, they were always young at heart.
Our family grew up close and throughout the years we celebrated birthdays, special events and spent summer vacations together.  Every weekend, we saw cousins and aunts and uncles and Nan was there at the center of it all.  She loved to shop and it became her mission to make sure that as kids, we got whatever we wanted. From treats to clothing, she always knew how to make things happen. Christmas time was made special because she loved it so much.  She was the most giving person I have ever known.
  I don’t know who was happiest when I got my license, me or Nan but we put a lot of miles on that old Pontiac.  We would start off shopping and end up at the Peking. Nan loved to go out to eat.  I know this passed right down the line as grandkids became old enough to drive.  
While Nan once travelled to Florida and would make frequent trips to the Valley over the years, she was always happiest at home.  She just loved having the family in.  She wasn’t one to look for time alone.  Many a night, Nan would be serving food to the large group of us gathered to play cards and although she didn’t take part, she loved listening to the laughter and the banter. When they moved to Cottage Road, she loved her new house and at this point, decided that all the cooking and mess could be moved out into the garage!  
When a family has so many great memories, it makes times like this so difficult.  We are not just saying good-bye to a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.  For us, we are saying good-bye to an era in our lives.  This is a monumental time for us.  However, Nan taught us many lessons.  She taught us how to live and how to accept death.  We watched her lose two children and Mick and carry on strong for the rest of us.  Nan was a survivor.  She clung to life and lived every moment.  She set for us a tough act to follow.  If we are all so lucky to have inherited an ounce of her strong will and determination, we will be the luckier for it.
On a beautiful spring morning, as the sun was about to rise, my grandmother passed from this world; her family not far away.  She didn’t leave behind a large bank account but I consider her the richest woman I know.  She has touched the lives of many and will be forever in our hearts and cherished in our memories.
