It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Christina Mary (Basque) AuCoin, 89, of Sydney River. Christina passed away on March 31, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Madeleine (Poulette) Basque. Christina was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Christina was an honest woman with good values, who was devoted to her Catholic faith. She was a fair minded, forgiving and non-judgmental person. She loved reading, and had a zest for learning and self-improvement. She was also a member of the St. John Ambulance and graduated from a communications program at UCCB. Mom also loved conversing in her native tongue, Mi’Kmaq.
She is survived by daughters Patricia, Sydney and Denise, at home; sons, Gerald, Sydney and Glen, Halifax; several nieces and nephews in Wagmatcook.
Christina was predeceased by her husband, Marcus; children, Phyllis Marie and Albert Wayne; sister, Bridget Paul and brother, Simon Basque.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4 at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Sydney River, with Rev Duaine Devereaux officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Salitey to follow at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre.
