Born in Sydney, Doug was the son of the late Ben and Annie (Currie) Falconer.
Doug is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ann (Steele) Falconer; his son, Brent, and Brent’s son, Ben; his son, Glenn, and Glenn’s daughters, Brea and Beth. He is also survived by brother-in-law, John (Caroline) Steele, and sisters-in-law, Rose (Bob) Belot, and Josie Steele; his nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Katie.
Doug was predeceased by his parents; his only sibling, brother Cecil; Cecil’s wife, Nora; nephew, Brian; his parents in-law, Harry and Catherine (Chiasson) Steele; and brother-in-law, Robert “Bobby” Steele.
Doug spent the majority of his career in the tire business, starting out with B.F. Goodrich of Canada, and then setting out on his own, establishing Mr. Tire Limited in Sydney and New Glasgow, and Cape Breton Bandag in Sydney, well over 50 years ago. Doug and Ann were also the owners of Tilden Rent-a-Car and King’s Taxi in Sydney for over a decade. Doug was a very astute and accomplished businessman, and was a recipient of the local Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Business Award. He brought his two sons into the business when they were very young, teaching them the ins and outs of the tire industry and business in general. Doug was a kind and generous man. He was a family man, and enjoyed sharing time with family at the cottage in Long Island over the years, as well as wintering in Florida with wife, Ann, and their many friends there. He loved animals, and always had a special place in his heart for his pets.
Doug was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Kinsman Club of Sydney. He was also a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Sydney River.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, with visitation from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, November 11, 2021. A mass of Christian burial will be held at Holy Redeemer Parish in Whitney Pier at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 12, 2021.
