It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Brother, Father, Grandfather, and Uncle Gordon who left us on November 21st at the age of 84. He was a cherished member of our family and friend to many, known for his kindness, humour, and unwavering support.
Gordon was born-on August 24th,1940, in Sydney, NS. He dedicated his life to Barbering with shops in Whitney Pier, Eskasoni and Membertou. He was the winner of a maritime hair styling competition. His chair was a place for laughter, storytelling, and camaraderie, where friends gathered not just for a haircut but for meaningful conversations. He took pride in his work, always ensuring that each client left feeling their best. His love for music brought joy to those around him, and he often shared his passion with family and friends. He filled our lives with melodies and memories that will resonate forever.
He was a natural athlete who excelled in Baseball where he was the first Mik’maq Little leaguer in Sydney playing on the Shipyard Red Sox. He enjoyed Bowling, Hockey, and Boxing.
Gordon experienced the horrors of the Shubenacadie Residential School and is a true survivor choosing to live his life full of joy and love.
Gordon enjoyed gambling on his down time, and he would often be found visiting the Membertou gaming building. He would never turn down a game of tarabish. Known for his quick wit and infectious laughter, Gordon had a unique ability to light up any room with his humour. His jokes, often filled with clever puns and playful anecdotes, brought joy to countless lives and made even the toughest days a little brighter. He shared countless stories of his adventures and life lessons, always encouraging us to pursue our dreams and cherish our loved ones. His slang and words for different things will be remembered by all that met him. You would have been called a nofit’em if you didn’t jeep away.
Gordon was close with all his surrounding family. Especially his niece Alexandria, his caretaker and best friend. Gordon and Alexan were partners in crime, when it came to adventuring around Sydney to watching sports games. The two were inseparable, especially at the end of his time. Alexan nofit will really miss his presence, the warmth he brought to her days and the memories that they shared.
He survived by his daughter Rose (Dennis) his brothers and sisters Alexander (Carol Ann), Mary Jane, Joe Paul (Yvonne), Natalie Paul (Stan). His grandchildren John K, Josh (Karina) Devon, Reannah. His Godchildren Dorothy Daix (Frank), Nicole Francis (Sean) Vicki Christmas (Vinny). Many Nieces and Nephews who he loved dearly like his own.
Predeceased by his Mom Madeline Sonier (John Sonier) his Dad Sulian Bernard. Brothers Alison Bernard (Freda Bernard), Walter Stevens. Aunts and Uncles Helen Martin, Mary Fritz, Peter Christmas, Patrick Christmas, Raymond Christmas, Gus Christmas, Victor Christmas. Nephew Aaron Augustus Christmas.
The Family wants to send a sincere thank you to the Palliative Care and Membertou home care workers for the fantastic care of our beloved Uncle.
Visitation will begin at 7:00 pm on Sunday, December 1, 2024 at 4 L'nu Ave. in Membertou. A Funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 , 11:00 am at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church with Fr. Bill Burke Officiating. Burial and Salite to follow
