

Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Michael John MacNeil (Christmas Island, NS ) and mother Mary Sarah MacNeil (Shenacadie, NS).
He was a member of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish. All who met Joe loved his easy going style and love for a good game of tarabish. Joe was also an avid dart player, bowler, and an Ace Soft Ball pitcher, In his younger years he was known to be light on the skates as a hockey player and liked to place the odd bet on the ponies. Joe was a lifelong member of the Ashby Legion and was instrumental in fundraising for the Legion, organizing dances and events, and dedicating his time as Treasurer, Vice President, and on special occasions, Santa. He and his beloved wife Bunny loved to head out to the dances at the legion and loved being with their family, especially the grandkids Elizabeth and Eric.
Joe is predeceased by his loving wife of 44 years, Brenda (Bunny) MacNeil; his brothers Michael and Gerard and brothers-in-law Ted Mills, Sheldon Pearson and he is survived by his 2 sons Dean (Megan), Huntsville, ON; Greg (Lynne), Toronto;, and 2 grandchildren Elizabeth (Stephen) and Eric. He is also survived by his sisters Jane and Marlene, brothers Allan (Sadie), Bernie (Aileen), Reggie (Theresa), Leonard (Louise), Gordie (Michele) and sister-in-law Lorna MacNeil, along with many nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Joe will take place on Wednesday, May 14, from 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 15 at 11 am at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Interment will take place in Resurrection Cemetery immediately following the mass. A reception will be held at the Ashby Legion on Thursday, May 15 starting at 2pm.
